Azat
Turks cleared in Armenia genocide case By Fiona Fleck in Berne(Filed: 15/09/2001) TWELVE Turks who denied that Ottoman forces committed genocide against the former empire's Armenian minority during the First World War were acquitted of racial discrimination by a Swiss court yesterday. Judge Linhard Ochsner told the court in Berne that it was impossible to apply anti-racism laws that have been used against those who deny the Holocaust because Switzerland had not classed the plight suffered by the Armenians as genocide. The verdict dealt a severe blow to Armenian efforts to gain Swiss recognition for the massacre of up to 1.5 million Armenians. Turkey claims the figure is much lower. Although the United Nations and the European parliament have recognised the attacks as genocide, Mr Ochsner said Switzerland needed to clarify its position. He said the accused, members of Swiss Turkish organisations, were not experts and could not have known better. http://portal.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jh...9/15/wbul15.xml

khodja
Gamavor, As an attorney, you should understand the nuances of this decision by the Swiss judge. He clearly stated that they were not guilty because they have been brainwashed by their former government to believe major untruths. These lies go far beyond The Genocide, but wish to falsify Anatolian history by eradicating all mention of Armenians. No other nation has gone this far. Americans preserve Native American history. Their sites are a major tourist destination.
gamavor
What the judge said is that, since Switzerland has no clear position on the issue, the defendants are acquitted. One of the reasons why they do not have clear position on the issue might be - money talks!... and please stop comparing the fate of Native Americans with what happened to Armenians. White settlers in America together with number of diseases and whisky brought culture and civilization (at the very beginning) to the New World, while barbarian turks brought destruction, blood and backwardness to all of Eastern Europe, Middle East, Caucasus and wherever they set foot in. khodja
Gamavor, I refer you to an article from Germany, "History Between Politics and the Justice System," posted in Groong. Yes, the points you made were discussed, but you are simplifying the judicial decision.
edward demian
Everytime justice is denied to a grieved party another terrorist is born. I think the Turks lost more in that decision than we did.
khodja
Please Edward, Terrorism is not the answer. I lost both my grandfathers, an aunt and uncle on my mother's side. Both my mother and father lost aunts and uncles, and 1/2 of their cousins. My dad also lost his inheritance to a collosal fortune. I believe that we should strictly adhere to the rule of law. Read the verdict closely in the Swiss case. It is not totally positive for the Turkish side.
edward demian
dear Nastratin.Iwas feeling a little dejected by the decision. Don't worry, I'm not refferring to myself or anyone I know. But we both know that aspirations denied breeds fanaticism, and the next step is...The Palestinins are a perfect example. What turned a miled mannered people who helped wretched Armenian refugees and took surviving chilldren in at a peril to themselves into monsters who shoot up school busses? It's not genetic drift. aurguplu
to everyone out there, now it is becoming a criminal offense in many countries to deny the armenian genocide , but in turkey it still remains a criminal offence to affirm it (there is no law that says that, probably, but all such stuff is dealt with under "subversive actions aimed at overthrowing the turkish state, the unity and indivisibilty of the fatherland, insulting the turkish nation etc.). and that law includes actions done outside turkish jurisdiction. you are a turk abroad. faced with such a question, what do you do (if you really know what had happened). does the law give you to remain silent in switzerland, france, etc.?).
