While conversing about spices=ՀԱՄԵՄՈՒՆՔ, I reposted the following.

So!!! Which is it? The Flower or the spice?

Upon further considerations I noticed some generalities, among which..

3. Մեխակ = Carnation.

My suspicion was roused when many of the ingredients are flowers, others are spices, like cinnamon etc.

The translator may be right as the flower carnation and the spice cloves are named such because they smell similarly. My question. Was item #3 in the above list did actually refer to the flower or the spice?

Armenian reference sources deepen the dilemma even further.

The Armatakan treats the subject exclusively as the spice, with hardly any mention of the flower.

Օհան, խնդրեմ ընդլայնիր:

ՄԵԽԱԿ= «ձագախոտ, խարանֆիլ»*, “caryophyllus”. Պրսկ. “mexak” هیخک «փոքր գամ, մեխ»**… Yes, the Angl-Pers dictionary does corroborate that the clove is “mekhak” and the flowere carnation is “gul mekhak” just like some Armenian sources also call the flower “karmir mekhak”.

Not to confuse with մեյխանէ= alcoholic bar= գինետուն/օղետուն/opium den:

Մեյխանաճիեան? They should rename themselves “kerkhana-ji-ian”.

* We know that in the Arabic, both the flower and the spice are called “qaranfil/qrnfl”.

**note the shape and see why it was named “small nail”

While the Hanragitaran treats the subject mainly as the flower. Or, are they talking about the spice tree?

ՄԵԽԱԿ(Dianthus), մեխակասզգիների ընտանիքի միամեայ կամ բազմամեայ խոտերի…..

Only at the end they say this-

Մեխակ է կոչվում նաեւ մեխակածառի չորացած ծաղկակոկոններից ստացվող համեմունքը (Mekhak also refers to the “clove tree”from where the spice is obtained.)

Բարի օր,

 

Թերեւս դու ինձնէ լաւ գիտես՝ համեմունքի վերաբերեալ, բայց եւ մասնակցիմ..

 

● Carnation եւ Caranfil (قرنفل, "caryophyllus")

 

Անգլերէն բառի արմատը՝ carn պէտք է ըլլայ. –ation-ը ածանց: Կարանֆիլի նման կը հնչէ՝ զանջաֆիլ: Ուստի՝ -ֆիլ, եթէ պայմանականօրէն ածանց համարենք, արաբերէն կարանֆիլ բառի արմատն ալ կարան է՝ նման անգլերէն carn արմատին:

 

 

Արմատականը «մեխակ» անուան ներքոյ ճանաչէ՝ համեմը: Մեխակ կոչուած է՝ պտղի մեխաձեւ (գամի ձեւ) լինելու պատճառով:

Համեմը կը նշէ:

 

Թեյի ջուրը, դարիճենիկով եւ մեխակով կ'եռացնենք. երեք մանր փշրանք դարճին եւ մեկ մեխակ չափով:

 

Nutmeg-ը جوز الطيب (բառացի՝ քաղցրութեան ընկոյզ) կը կոչենք, բոլորովին ուրիշ համեմ է:

 

«Հանրագիտարան»ը այժմ ձեռնտու չէ, բայց ըստ գրածիդ՝ նկատի ունի բոյսի ընդհանուր տեսակը, ետքը, միայն որպէս յուշագրում՝ թուած է մեխակ-գամ համեմը:
