Armenian MPs in protest walkout

Opposition members of the Armenian parliament walked out of the chamber earlier today in protest after an address on Ngorno-Artsax by the head of the Council of Europe's parliamentary assembly, Lord Russell-Johnston.

Twenty MPs left after Lord Russell-Johnston told them that the assembly's former speaker, who was killed in 1999, had struck an agreement to give territories occupied by Armenian forces in the predominantly Armenian enclave, to Azerbaijan.

The former speaker, Karen Demirchian, was killed in October 1999 along with the prime minister and six others when an armed group opened fire inside the parliament building.
