Racism in the Soviet Union???

I hear from many Armenians, Georgians, Azeris, Chechens how they are labeled "cherni"--meaning a derogatory term for "black." Obviously, we are not equals in the eyes of Russians. Now, what about the Central Asians and Mongols living in Russia? I bet they suffer worse treatment because their physical differences are obvious. I heard that in the Soviet Army, only Kazaks and Uzbeks were used to scrub toilets. There were "cliques" inside the military based alongside ethnic, religious, cultural and racial lines. Often, there were interracial fights and conflicts (usually Russian-Ukrainian vs. the darker minority peoples). Maybe this is why Chechens and Tatars hate Russians so much?

And russian are "Russaki" :) About kazakhs or uzbeks i don't really think that they label them, they hate caucasians because they envy. Did you know that if you walk in Moscow if you walk down the street, police will stop you for no reason and ask your identification, but thats the best, they can easily take you to police station and lock you for couple of days, for fun. My brother was fyling from Armenia to Kazakhstan through Moscow, they kept him for about 2 days in Moscow... That's why they are "russaki"! :)

My stepmother used to call me "chernomazii" and "chernozadii" all the time i didn't know what the hell she was talking about but know i know she was russian so i guess maybe the russians in russia have a very big problem. We were the "niggers" of the soviet union.

from what i gathered, Russians prefer Caucasus peoples over Central Asians and Siberian Asiatic natives. This is highly reflected in the Soviet military.

The order:

1) Slavic and Baltic peoples

2) Caucasus people

3) Tatars, Turkmen, Uzbek and Tajiki

4) Kazak, Kirgiz, Mongols, Buryats, Siberians

They have two derogatory terms for Central Asians and Siberians: Kitaitsi (Chinese) and the other is "slant eyes." But, I think Russians hate Chechens, Jews, and Tatars the most.

I guess the Caucasians have a higher rank in the Army, beacuse they are more stubborn and troublesome, which Russian think of as maculine character. The Tajiks are also white and look actually like caucasians and a lot of them are like Russians very racist against the Asiatic looking people too.

I always like to point this racism towards Armenians out in Russia, to Armenians who are racist towards Blacks, Mexicans and others. Amot!

My family has also experienced racism here in the good ol' USA. On both sides. My mom recalls being in Georgia and waiting forever to be served, while every redneck that came after her was waited on hand and foot. Plus my dad's uncle, who really inherited the American Indian genes with a vengeance (straight jet black hair, high cheekbones, slantish eyes, olive skin) was often called a nigger, injun, etc. when growing up.

Read and look over this post at all these experiences, then tell me if you dont think that rascism is ugly in all it's forms. I felt sick just reading them, and my heart bleeds for all of you. I'll protect you!

- While my dad was growing up in Cyprus the kids were NEVER off his back about being armenian.

- My Aunt married a lovely guy who looks after her and the kids. Because he was black my grandmother and my dad would not speak to him. I thought it was disgusting.

- My dad brought me up to be racist and my mum brought me up not to be. I went with my mum!

I always seem to sympathize with the minority. I think racism is used in countires as the old divide and conquer rule. Why are the blacks and latinos in ghettos?? Cuz the gov't wants it that way. The white people live here, the blacks live there, the hispanic people live here. We should recognize this and not let the hate overtake us. If we do we are no better than some of those ignorant Russians that call us "chernomazii" and such.

Hate that addresses to Caucasians sometimes makes you feel proud. They hate because they envy, they hate because they fear. So, let them hate and fear at the same time... that makes them to be lower than us! And that makes us to be more proud!

I don't like to use race as an excuse.

Do you guys know that the Vietnamese people came under the most adverse conditions to the U.S.? Yet, their parents who came with nothing were able to stress education and upward mobility on to their children. They are now one the fastest growing minority groups headed towards middle class. They have abandoned ghettos, gangs, and welfare checks. I believe you can make it here if you try. The caste system here is fixed but not permanent.

Very interesting insights Gr. but I am afraid you are wrong about the Vietnamese. They continue having a severe gang problem, ask anyone who works for the El Monte, Alhambra, Rosemead, Westminister, Garden Grove or San Gabriel Police Departments. Asian gangs are known for being especially ruthless and cruel. The difference is they usually have good jobs and attend universities. There are numerous Asian gang members you see walking around on the CSUF and CSLA campuses, as well as UCLA and the other UCs. Go down the 605 freeway on any night between Imperial Hwy and the Cerritos Mall and you will see numerous Asian gangsters in their lowered supped up Hondas aggresively terrorizing each other and innocent drivers who happen to get in their way. Watch out!

Halfbreed, I think people would say pretty much the same about us. Yet, we know it is far from the whole picture. Gangs are a sign of a stigmatized and stratified group. Racial and ethnic minorities are stigmatized and stratified groups. For all intents and purposes, Armenians and Asians belong under that category give and take a few minor exceptions. When there is isolation, then there is a need for belonging. In this case, gangs are there to fill that role. Some groups have not been fully absorbed or amalgamated. But, that doesn't mean that they have not assimilated or acculturated. In the case of Asians, they are upwardly mobile in socio-economics but continue to lag in full acceptance. Armenians also have been upwardly mobile, but they reject full acceptance or maybe they also are denied full acceptance? With other groups, although they may have been here for generations and are highly acculturated, there is little if any upward mobility. Concerning your comments of Asian gangbangers at universities: "is it an assumption you made based on their clothing and demeanor?"

Another thing I want to add to the racism argument is that earlier immigrants to the U.S. such as Jews, Chinese, Japanese as well as Armenians faced real discrimination and racism. They were forced to be insular and self-dependent communities. Yet, today these groups are among some of the better achieving ethnic groups in terms of education and income. Their forefathers came with nothing off the boat. They literally made millions out of pennies. Race didn't stop them. It may have stalled them for one generation or two.

Back to the original topic. Do any of you remember those incidents back then in either Moscow or St. Petersburg where some Asians and some Black marines were beaten by skinheads? Russia is just as racist as any other white nation. By the way, when I was studying in China I saw growing numbers of Russian prostitutes. I was one unlucky customer!

Yes, I'm celebrating it tommorrow. I will cook a wicked dinner!

Yes I agree with you about the controversial topics too I feel bored! I try to post some but it doesnt come over as well! I suppoese some have a talent for it. Hakob? I don't know. Iranyar? He has been banned from the forum. I dont think it was fair.

well, what I ment was that when pople get too heavily assimilated they assimilate into the hoods and ghettos then assimilate into the gangs culture that everyone expects fron them because of their race or their last name. That's not good! It is possible to maintain your identity culture and roots without becoming upwardly mobile.

The trouble with this is , mixing with WASPS or people who are not part of your background then you begin to feel you lse your culture a bit

Kazza, you have a real good point. When minorities like us Armenians, Asians, blacks, Mexicans etc. "make it" we usually live in homes, go to school and generally associate with the dominant society= "WASPS, whites, Anglos, you name it...."

That's how we lose it all, by acculturating and assimilating into the larger society.

On the otherhand, poverty inclines to keep you at fixed boundaries and to stay in certain communities. No money, but the survival of an ethnic sub-identity.

About the gang thing, it is a way macho men or boys show off their masculinity and identity. Many guys at the immature or high school age level think it is the only way to show pride, acceptance and to "win over girls." Armenians are susceptible because there is no social mixing between genders. When a bunch of boys get together, things happen. It is stupid. You know what I'm saying? We don't need to "act white or black." We just have to be ourselves and content/secure with it.

Good appetite! I have nowhere and nothing to do on Christmas. Hey, any of you have MSN or ICQ?
