By CLAUDIA PESCHIUTTA GLENDALE -- Support is growing for a local project that may have a global influence. Events to help raise money for the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry Charitable Trust have recently been held in locations around the world and brought Dr. Frieda Jordan of Glendale one step closer to achieving a dream. Jordan co-founded the project in 1999 in the hope of giving Armenians with blood-related diseases a better chance of finding bone marrow donors that meet their specific needs. The latest fund-raiser for the project, held earlier this month in Sherman Oaks, brought in more than $15,000, Jordan said. About 150 people went to the event, which was attended by the deputy health minister of Armenia, she said. Guests were shown a video of children in Armenia suffering from leukemia and heard from the mother of a child whose daughter was once in need of a bone marrow transplant. "People see the reality," Jordan said. "They see that this is not something abstract." Other recent fund-raising efforts put on by the trust include an exhibit in Washington, D.C. and a benefit concert held on Oct. 17 in Armenia. The Oct. 17 event featured the country's first lady, Bella Kocharyan, an honorary chairwoman for the trust.
