vava Posted December 23, 2008 Report Share Posted December 23, 2008 Seems like a pretty good browser - I haven't used it much yet, but by all accounts things are promising. I've been using Firefox pretty steadily, and things have improved with their version 3 release. With the extensions I've added, and regularly use, I don't see a need to switch, although I'm certain Chrome has a similar extensible structure. It has been my primary browser for about 6 months at least. I just love it (especially now that it is out of beta and a lot of bugs have been ironed out). It has a number of advantages over other browsers but the main thing is it's clean, FAST, and has a very useful interface. You can drag tabs around in and out of windows ... every tab is it's own process so usually one crashing due to a bad plugin or some strange javascript will not cause the whole browser to crash. But main thing is that it is very small, clean and did I say FAST? There are still a few issues to keep in mind however: 1. There is no google toolbar support (yah, strangely enough!). So this means your google bookmarks aren't as easily available like they would be in IE or firefox. I use those all the time. 2. There is no fire-fox like plug-in support yet so if you rely heavily on firefox plug-ins (like ad blockers), you may want to try Chrome a bit before doing a full switch. 3. No Mac or linux version yet but they are rapidly working on it. If you haven't tried Chrome, try it for a bit. You might end up liking it a lot. I have about 3-4 extensions I use daily - and my comfort level would take a hit if I were to use them. The best thing is, the extensions are available on both platforms I use, so my browser profile is the same over multiple machines. I'm certain Chrome's gonna get there - but not yet for me anyway. Next to the address bar where you type searches or web addresses, there are two buttons. One looks like a sheet of paper the other looks like a wrench. They get you pretty much all the options (like menus). Shitf-ESC will bring up the chrome task manager. Here you can stop individual plug-ins or kill individual tabs. Doesn't Google have some sort of deal with Firefox and IE? Yah it went out of beta just recently (a couple weeks?). It may still crash once in a while but not any worse than IE or firefox. For me it is runing very solid. There were some flash plug-in problems with videos being choppy or freezing but most of that seems to have been worked out so make sure you have latest versions of flash and java. As far as a deal, I doubt Google would have any deals with IE but Google has traditionally been very supportive of firefox. Now the relationship is a bit "complicated" according to firefox but they are still quite friendly it seems. You have to keep in mind Google doesn't care much about making profit from the browser ... Google's goal is to have it's own stuff which pretty much entirely run in a browser to run fast, stable, and make the people want to use them (like gmail, calendar, docs, maps, earth, chat, social networking, etc etc).
