STEPANAKERT (Combined Sources)--Some 700 couples tied the knot Thursday in a mass ceremony, through an event organized by benefactor Levon Hayrapetyan in an effort to encourage an increase in Artsakh's population.

The couples headed to Stepanakert's Renaissance Square where the wedding ceremony took place. Then the couples headed for the Stepan Shahumian Sports Complex and Stadium for a large reception, at which time their official marriage licenses were issued. Some of the couples headed for Gandzasar for their honeymoon.

Each couple was issued a gift card from Unibank as a wedding gift. The couples are also in for several surprises as it was announced that for each child they bare, a monetary reward will be provided in the following manner: 1st child: $2000; 2nd $3000; 3rd $5000; 5th $20,000; 6th $50,000 and 7th $100,000.

Earlier this summer, Haryrapetyan told reporters that his aim was to increase the Karabakh population to 300,000 and this was an incentive for couples to marry and raise families in Artsakh.

May they all have 17 kids. They should have to make up for all of the deaths throughout our history.

Finally someone put their money where their mouth is...Hoorayyy... may they multiply like rabbits and save ARMENIA in the process!!!!!!!

what about 8th???

How about 200.000 then 1million for the twelft...

I am serious about this...All the economic developments and temporary wealth are for naught if there is no population to enjoy it!

The strenght of a nation is a numbers game whether we like it or not...

The old Armenian church of Gandzasar hadn’t seen so many brides at once ever since it was built in 13th c.

Show in White: “I Do” and so do they, and they and they . . .

You might say it was a big wedding. There were, um, 675!!!!!!!!!!!! brides and 675!!!!!!!!!!! grooms…

For Nagorno Karabakh, with a population of 140,000 it was surely an unprecedented show. Ceremonies were divided between Gandzasar monastery and Ghazanchetsots church in Shushi.

The idea of arranging a mass wedding party belonged to Russia-based businessman and benefactor, native of Karabakh, Levon Hayrapetyan. The idea embraced the businessman’s penchant for flare and his desire to see Karabakh repopulated.

Last year, when the government of Karabakh was seriously discussing the demographic situation in the country thinking what measures to take to improve it, surveys and public inquiries were held. The results showed that many young people don’t get married and do not have children because of financial and housing issues. The government decided to allocate $1,000 per each newlywed couple. Then Hayrapetyan’s idea of arranging a big wedding came up along with another idea of finding sponsors overseas for the newlyweds.

Hayrapetyan- The Man of the Day, a Godfather or, as Armenians say, Kavor of 675 couples.

Each couple ended up receiving $2,500 in form of a Gold Card plus $1000 from the state. The firstborn child will bring its parents $2,000, the second one- $3,000, the third child- $5,000, the forth one - $10,000, the fifth one- $20,000, the sixth child- $50,000, and the seventh child would bring its happy parents $100,000.

“We were planning to get married next year, but when this spring we were told that they were registering for participation in a collective wedding, we decided to take part by all means. My fiancé didn’t agree at first, but then I talked him into it. It sounded so interesting: a town full of brides. And $2,000 isn’t little money.

We could have a honeymoon trip,” says Gayane Harutyunyan.

Due to the state-implemented social program the number of marriages is higher than ever: within the 8 months of this year 2,160 marriages were registered which is 4 times more than during the same period of last year.

Many couples didn’t wait for the collective wedding and had a traditional one with relatives and friends, because only bride’s and groom’s parents were allowed to be present at the collective wedding. There wasn’t enough room to have many guests. So each couple had two weddings. Sergey and Karina got married 3 months ago. Sergey jokes that by the number of pregnant brides this was an unprecedented wedding indeed.

Reporters from abroad came to Karabakh to cover the event. “To be honest, it was a strikingly spectacular sight. Of course a whole street of brides in white looked really beautiful. I have talked to many couples. They are grateful for presents and for help with the wedding,” a Russian reporter shared her impressions with ArmeniaNow.

Even during the Soviet times journalism never witnessed a crowd which was hypnotized to such extent. “I don’t know a word in Armenian, and could only hear that every 2 minutes somebody said ‘Levon Hayrapetyan’. The impression was as if it’s a new personality cult,” she says.

Hayrapetyan in his turn had many other ideas about how to hold the wedding. At first the plan was that sponsors would gift a cow to each newlywed village couple but with a condition that the couples would take their cows home on their own. During the “rehearsal general” village couples were brought to Vank and “asked” to each lead “their” cow. It turned out, though, that the brides were afraid of cows, and cows were afraid of the brides. In the end they decided to drive the cattle together.

Hayrapetyan is known for his truly patriotic initiatives and his predilection for grandiose shows, including the idea to hold donkey race in Vank, the winner getting a price of $ 1,500.

More than 10 years ago Hayrapetyan who, as he himself confesses, was a man of wealth, started large-scale projects in Karabakh. He built a modern wood-processing plant in the village Vank of Martakert region. Next were a hotel, school, recreation zones, asphalt-covered roads, gas, water supply system. The road leading to Gandzasar monastery was repaired. A big water reservoir is being built in Vank again by his financial support.

In the evening of the grand wedding day people of Karabakh enjoyed a concert at the stadium with participation of Armenian pop starts.

As housing prices in Karabakh have soared, $2,500 won’t go far in establishing a homestead. In September a square meter of housing in Stepanakert cost an average of $825, which means that a single bedroom apartment can’t be bought for less than $50,000. The average salary in Karabakh is 78,700 AMD ($260). After the recent events in South Ossetia and the world house mortgage crisis the real estate market in Karabakh has become utterly passive. So the majority of the 675 couples will yet be facing a housing problem.
