ANC-OC hosts the second annual Walk for Remembrance

15.04.2008 14:55

The Armenian National Committee of Orange County (ANC-OC) will host the second annual Walk for Remembrance on Sunday April 20, 2008. The event is organized in collaboration with Saint Mary's Armenian Apostolic church and with the participation of over 20 organizations from Orange County.

The event will begin at Saint Mary's Armenian Apostolic Church in Costa Mesa, CA with church services and hokehankisd. The 8 mile walk will begin at 1:00pm heading towards Forty Martyr's Apostolic Church in Garden Grove, CA. Upon completion of the walk, refreshments will be provided to the participants and a commemorative program will follow. The event will feature Representative Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) as the keynote speaker. The program will also include other speeches and performances by local community representatives.

The first annual ANC-OC Walk for Remembrance last year was an overwhelming success with over 300 individuals who participated in the walk, and over 200 who attended to show their support for the participants. In a heartwarming scene, the last mile was led by Father Moushegh Tashjian and Father Hrant Yeretzian into the Forty Martyrs Armenian Apostolic Church, with the Armenian and American flags waving behind them to honor the memories of the 1.5 million victims lost during the genocide.

ANC Central California honors Mayor Autry as 2008 "Man of the Year"

15.04.2008 15:56

The Armenian National Committee of Central California honored Fresno Mayor Alan Autry as the 2008 Man of the Year. Nearly 200 guests and community leaders attended the luncheon to show their support for the Mayor.

"We wanted to thank the Mayor for his steadfast support of Armenian Genocide recognition," said ANC Central California representative, Hilda Santikian. "He has vowed to build a monument in memory of the 1.5 million Armenians who lost their lives at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, and for that we are truly grateful," she said.

Mayor Autry has been an immense supporter of the flag raising ceremony which has been taking place at Fresno City Hall on April 24 for the past 3 years. This year will mark the fourth year in which the Armenian flag will be raised next to the American flag at City Hall.

"Recognition such as genocide needs to take place, it must take place," stated Autry. "Not only for the Armenian people but also for the people of Turkey so that the healing process could begin," he added.

Among those in attendance were Darren Rose, District Director to Congressman George Radanovich, Fresno City Councilman Blong Xiong, Fresno City Councilman Tom Boyajian, Fresno City Councilwoman Cynthia Sterling, Haig Kartounian, District Appropriations and Grants Coordinator for Congressman Adam Schiff and Armenian National Committee Western Region Community Relations Director, Haig Hovsepian.

The mayor received numerous proclamations from other leaders including Governor Schwarzenegger, Congressman Jim Costa, California State Assemblyman Mike Villines, and Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate.

Office of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

Lisa Kalustian Chief Deputy Director

Los Angeles, CA 90013

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has proclaimed the week of

April 20th through April 27th as "Days of Remembrance of the Armenian

Genocide."

EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT

STATE OF CALIFORNIA

PROCLAMATION

Every April, we take time to commemorate the lives of those forever

devastated by the Armenian Genocide. Between 1915 and 1923, more than

one million Armenians were killed in the territory of the Ottoman

Empire, and countless more lost everything they owned. Intellects and

store owners, children and seniors, men and women, people from all walks

of life were victims of these horrific acts. Often listed as the first

genocide of the twentieth century, these events had a life-altering

impact on many, and stimulated an Armenian Diaspora.

California has ensured that those lost and affected by this tragedy will

not be forgotten. In 2006, I signed Assembly Bill 1210, authored by

Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, to allow construction of a memorial for

California's survivors in Capitol Park. Additionally, in 2005, I signed

Senate Bill 424 authored by Senator Chuck Poochigian, which designated

in state law a specific time to observe the California Days of

Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide.

I ask all Californians to take time this week to reflect on this tragedy

and its consequences. In joining our friends in the Armenian-American

community in this observance, all of California helps remember the lives

that were lost or changed by these fateful events.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of

California, do hereby proclaim April 20-27, 2008, as "Days of

Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide."

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great

Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 7th day of April

2008.

ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER

Governor of California

LECTURE ON POST-GENOCIDE RESCUE OF ARMENIAN

WOMEN AND CHILDREN AT ARARAT-ESKIJIAN MUSEUM

Prof. Vahram Shemmassian, Assistant Professor of Armenian and Director

of the Armenian Studies Program at California State University,

victims in Syria in the immediate aftermath of World War I. More

specifically, it will highlight the governments, agencies, and

individuals involved in the recovery campaign; venues of and obstacles

to liberation; and shelter and disposal.

Shemmassian received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los

Angeles, in 1996 with a dissertation entitled "The Armenian Villagers of

We want to show how our ancestors lived in our homeland. The whole world knows about the Armenian Genocide and our goal is to show not only the cultural monuments but also the people who lived there. Organization of our exhibition abroad is also very important. The Congressmen will know that they take the right decision if they see these photographs,” Mr Karapetyan said.

He also informed that the Shushi Foundation will arrange a photo exhibition dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Sardarapat battle celebrated on May 28.

Event dedicated to 93rd anniversary of Armenian Genocide to be held in Moscow

19.04.2008

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ On April 20, the Moscow Organization of the Union of Armenians of Russia (UAR) will hold an event dedicated to the 93rd anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

As a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter came to know from the UAR, a new feature film about the Armenian Genocide will be screened during the event.

The Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923 is the first genocide of the 20th century. Some 1.5 million of Armenians were slaughtered in the ethnic cleansing organized by the Ittihad ve Terakki (Unity and Progress) party. Some 500 thousand fled and found shelter in various countries, thus forming the Armenian Diaspora, which numbers 5 millions now.

'GEORGETOWN BOYS' COMMEMORATES ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

by Rosemary Ford

The Eagle-Tribune

April 17, 2008 Thursday

North Andover, Massachusetts

Apr. 17--It was the first genocide of the 20th century.

More than 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks between

1915 and 1923.

Thousands of children were orphaned. A group of 109 were sent to

Georgetown, Canada, to learn to be farmers.

What happened to that group will be explored in "The Georgetown Boys"

by renowned Armenian playwright Dr. Herand Markarian.

The Armenian Genocide Commemorative Committee of the Merrimack Valley

will bring this original play to North Andover Sunday for its New

England premiere, before it heads on a tour of the United States.

"We heard it was excellent, excellent," said chairwoman Sossy

Jeknavorian of Chelmsford.

The committee honors survivors of the genocide every year -- a dozen

still live in the Merrimack Valley. The group previously brought

another play by Markarian, "Mirrors," here to great acclaim.

"We never forget -- we have to honor the survivors," Jeknavorian said.

Markarian's bilingual (English and Armenian) play will be staged by the

24 children and adults of the Hamazkayin of New Jersey Youth Theater

Group. The Hamazkayin is a worldwide organization that bolsters the

Armenian culture among those who left the country after the genocide.

The story follows the boys -- all between the ages of 8 and 12 --

who worked on farms in the suburb of Toronto and eventually became

farmers in their own right.

"We are very fortunate to be staging this production," said committee

member Tom Vartabedian of Haverhill, who is also a columnist for the

Haverhill Gazette, a sister publication of The Eagle-Tribune.

A service for the victims of the genocide will precede the play,

accompanied by the Armenian Choral Group of the Merrimack Valley.

Ruse, fourth Bulgarian city to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide

18.04.2008 14:43

Thursday 17 April, Ruse city passed a city council resolution acknowledging the Armenian Genocide by 36 against 3 and 5 abstentions. Ruse (175 000 inhabitants) is becoming the fourth large city of Bulgaria to engage upon such a move after Varna (650 000 inhabitants), Plovdiv (380 000 inhabitants) and Burgas (230 000 inhabitants), the European Armenian Federation informed.

While Europe is becoming more and more permissive to Turkish denial, the European Armenian Federation warmly commends the citizens of Ruse, the members of their city council as well as the local Armenian community and especially the Armenian National Committee of Bulgaria.

The Federation recall that a similar resolution adopted in February by the city of Burgas has triggered the freeze of any commercial relations by the neighbouring Turkish region of Edirne (Andrinople), and noteworthy the European trans-boundary program PHARE. This episode gave evidence of the threat represented by Turkey’s State denial on the policies of the European Union.

Bulgaria is ruled by a coalition between Socialists and an ethnic party representing the large Turkish community of the country (10%).
