On Tuesday, April 24, 2001, the four-month-old Harvard Armenian Society will present a free symposium on the Armenian Genocide. The program will consist of talks from Professor Kevork Bardakjian, Marie Manoogian Professor of Armenian Literature at the University of Michigan, Professor Vahakn Dadrian, Director of Genocide Research at the Zoryan Institute, and Professor Peter Balakian, Author and Donald M and Contance H. Rebar Chair in Humanities at Colgate University. The program begins at 7 pm at the Harvard Science Center, Hall D, and the speakers will be interrupted by a thirty minute dessert reception from 8-8:30. Moderating part of the event will be Professor James R.

Russell, Mashtots Chair of Armenian Studies at Harvard University. The themes of the Symposium will be `Justice Under One Empire: Turkish Court-Martials of Ottoman Genocide Perpetrators' and `The Armenian Genocide: Ottoman and German Documentation and American Cultural Response.'

 

The program is sponsored by the Armenian General Benevolent Union, with the extended patronage of the Sheraton Commander Hotel in Cambridge. Harvard University is providing security in anticipation of a hotly controversial event. The program is the first undergraduate-run Genocide commemoration in over two decades.

 

The Harvard Armenian Society was resurrected in January, 2001, and currently consists of over one hundred Armenians affiliated with the University. Members of the Society include residents of Massachusetts, New Jersey, Illinois, Florida, California, New York, Canada, Armenia, and Lebanon.
