The International Boxing Olympic Rating Tournament finished on March 2 in the city of Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy. Among seven sportsmen of Armenia, Andranik Hakobian (75 kg, Etchmiadzin) took the 3rd place and gained the permit of Beijing 2008. Hovhannes Danielian (48 kg, Yerevan), Hrachya Javakhian (60 kg, Vanadzor), and Edward Hambartsumian (64 kg, Yerevan) had gained the permit of Beijing 2008 before. Wouldn't it be kind of cool to have a flag smiley - you know - for those times when we feel really nationalistic? I am so ready for the upcoming Olympics. These are their last opportunities to book Olympic berths. Armenpress was told from RA Wrestling Federation that Greco-Roman style wrestlers, who have already booked two Olympic berths, have the opportunity to qualify for Beijing 2008 durig tournaments in Rome on 9-11 May and Noviy Sad (Serbia) on 23-25 May. Roman Amoyan (55 kg) became the Vice-Champion, losing only in the final. The head coach of the Armenian Greco-Roman style wrestling team is Olympic Champion Levon Julfalakyan. Four Armenian boxers have already won such qualifications. Rafael Mehrabian, head coach of Armenia's national boxing team, told Armenpress the competition in Greece is the last chance for Armenian and European boxers to win Olympic Games licenses. He said there will be tough fighting as many countries have not yet won any qualification. Armenian boxers are Derenik Gzhlarian, 51 kg, Arthur Hambardzumian, 54 kg, Azat Hovhanesian, 57 kg and Samvel Matevosian, 60 kg. Rafael Ghazarian said in previous games in Athens Armenia was represented by one boxer, in Beijing it will be presented at least by 4 athletes. The last International Olympic Rating Tournament finished on April 13 in the capital city of Greece, Athens. None of the 5 Armenian delegates was included in the rating three. Thus, Armenia will send four boxers, Hovhannes Danielian (48 kg, Yerevan), Hrachya Javakhian (60 kg, Vanadzor), Eduard Hambartsumian (64 kg, Yerevan), and Andranik Hakobian (75 kg, Etchmiadzin), to the Beijing Olympic Games. Martirosyan became an all-round champion in the European Weightlifting Championship held in Lignano (Italy) and the fourth Armenian Champion in the tournament. Martirosyan won in the snatch, clean and jerk combination with the result of 377 kg, outrunning his main competitor Georgy Markov of Moscow with four points. He had no equal in the snatch (172 kg) and the clean and jerk (205 kg). Edgar Gevorgyan (94 kg) achieved a silver medal in the snatch, Arthur Babayan (105 kg) occupied the 8th position in the snatch with 171 kg and failed in the clean and jerk. The Armenian weightlifters became the winner in the team ranking, gaining 17 medals, including 13 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals. Let us remind that Meline Daluzyan (63 kg) and Nazik Avdalyan (69 kg) became European Champions in the women's competition. Tigran G. Martirosyan (69 kg), Tigran V. Martirosyan (85 kg) became all-round champions. This was the second subsequent victory of the Armenian weightlifting team in the European Championship, which provides the opportunity to send 5 male and 2 female weightlifters to the Olympic Games in Beijing. During the preparation period, the boxers, free-style and Greco-Roman wrestlers and weightlifters are training in the Tsakhkadzor olympic sports complex, while the swimmers and athletes are undergoing training in Yerevan and Gymri. Norayr Bakhtamian, a 4th prize winner at the previous Olympics in Athens, is training at "Mytishche" olympic shooting-range near Moscow and will compete in the open championship of the Russian Federation on July 1-10. The Armenian judoists have been invited to participate in the instructive training gathering of representatives of more than 20 countries in Spain on June 27-July 7.
