Sip
Would need a bit more detail about what was done but you should always: 1. Keep up with latest updates and patches (i.e. windows update for windows) 2. Have good up to date anti virus 3. Run spy-ware / ad-ware removal tools often (like spybot) 4. Close any open holes on your computer .. like don't share any drives or folders ... password protect the login account with non trivial passwords ... stop unnecessary services ... don't run programs that open up things on your pc (such as file sharing programs) without knowing what you are doing. 5. Firewalls are good if you don't know what is going on. They close outside access to your pc. 6. Don't click on things that look suspicious ... be aware of what you are doing (this is obviously a lot harder to do than to say ) 7. When unsure, ask! Here is not a bad place to get help when something is fishy.

I guess they are people that know you right? Doesn't changing your IP address help? Edited February 27, 2008 by ALMA

Doesn't changing your IP address help? Well, I'm guessing he had a mic but I don't know anyone that uses a mic. He only said one thing. I think he got carried away with what he was doing. I generally switch off between IE and FireFox. IE works faster but there are more crackers there and that's what I was using at the time. I've never had the whole cracker problem with FireFox. I think it's time for some spring cleaning though. Edited February 27, 2008 by Zara

Ashot
Zara jan I am guessing that you went into a site, where you heard someone say something... it is not necessary that someone did really hack into your system. It could be a pop up, like one of those when you go to a website and it says you have won something!!! so another type of an advertisement could be trying to make you think your comp. was hacked so you will get the anti virus from that given site!!! AVO
Ashot jan, I don't know about you, but if my computer starts talking to me(not the congratulations type). I just turn disconnect the computer or at least the internet connection.

munch
script kiddie's... I hate these guys. They freak me out every time. Is there a way to avoid them? It was never a huge problem before but now they're everywhere. The right term is "script ./kiddie" and yes, to avoid them, get firewall, and just be very careful with people you don't know. in other words use max protection! good luck! I think he got carried away with what he was doing. I had no clue such things were possible. It sounds pretty scary!

I know now what you man, I used to face similar problem, I've been using Kaspersky internet security for the past 5 6 months and it's very good, no pop ups or anything at all. Ashot
Zar jan, are you using a router or just straight the dsl modem? To max up protection, if you are not that familiar with firewalls and how to set them up, the easiest way is to get yourself a router... Afterwards get the Norton Corporate Edition and Panda Express!!! Both of them together will max out your protection!!! trust me on this one!!! Azat
its hard to see what people are saying or doing when you are in the buffet surrounded by all that food. How you doing Sipanchik? how is life up north
Sip
Life is great ... I can say for the first time in my life I am getting paid for something I really like doing. I knew I loved programming before but this is just taking it to the 'next level'. Best of all, it's the environment though ... completely surrounded by some really sharp (and sometimes uber geeky) people. It is a refreshing experience to not be even remotely close to being the smartest one in any given room all the time ahahahaha. My biggest problem has been not stopping for more food/desert/snacks on the way back from food. We've been making fun of one of my office mates for saying: "Oh this steak is good, but not nearly as good as the steak I had for lunch". Unfortunatley though I haven't had much of a chance to really keep up with what's going on here even though I just click to see what's new almost every day ... good to see a lot of new people and a lot of energy being put into this place again.
