Uruguay Senate Recognizes Genocide

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay--The Uruguay National Senate unanimously passed a resolution marking "April 24 a national day of remembrance for the Armenian Genocide."

The Armenpress news agency, quoting the Armenian foreign ministry, reported that Uruguay is the first country in the world to recognize the Genocide in a resolution adopted in 1965.

Resolution author Senator Dr. Alberto Sid said that the bill aimed at registering Uruguay's official position on the Armenian Genocide, as a crime against humanity.

Sen. Jamado Fau said that the adoption of the resolution, "for a second time affirms justice regarding the Armenian Genocide." The legislature expressed hope that other countries will follow the example of his "small country" and adopt resolutions recognizing the Genocide.
