Guest Posted November 25, 2000 Report Share Posted November 25, 2000 CALLING ALL HEARTS Local telethon will make international appeal to help residents of Armenia, Nagorno-Artsax. By CLAUDIA PESCHIUTTA GLENDALE -- Celebrities, politicians and volunteers will gather in a local studio today in an effort that could provide thousands of people with many reasons to give thanks. "Telethon 2000" will present an appeal to viewers around the world today for contributions to help improve the quality of life in Armenia and the neighboring, disputed territory of Nagorno-Artsax, places with struggling economies. While the telethon will be broadcast in several countries and on the Internet, many contributions are expected to come from the residents of Glendale, which has the largest Armenian population outside of Armenia. "They play a great big part," said Teni Melidonian, a spokeswoman for the telethon. Money raised during the 11-hour event will be used to help fund the construction of a highway in Nagorno-Artsax and four schools in Armenia, which is still recovering from a devastating 1988 earthquake. The telethon is co-sponsored by Glendale-based Armenia Fund, Inc., an affiliate of an international humanitarian aid group headed by Armenian President Robert Kocharyan. Armenia Fund President Zaven Khanjian said that most of the appromixately 500 people who will be helping out with today's event are from Glendale. "We're proud of the citizenship in Glendale," he said. "They're a great hand." Melidonian said last year's telethon raised more than $5 million, with about 60% of the contributions coming from Glendale and surrounding cities. Glendale City Councilman Rafi Manoukian said he will make an appearance on the annual telethon because he wants to help. "It's part of my heritage and being part of the whole thing, in a small way, I think is satisfying," he said. The event will be broadcast locally on KSCI-TV Channel 18.
