I heard a disappointing story from the games where during a basketball game, an Armenian from Glendale called the opposing Armenians from Istanbul "dirty turks" and in a shocking statement (at least, for me) they replied by saying "Hey, WE have Massis". A physical fight broke out afterwards...

After that match another fight broke out between the teams of Cairo and Yerevan!

if u want more of those 2 fights there is an entry in Oneworld Multimedia blog!

I will not comment on the fights coz we are armenians and things like that tend to happen when armenians from different countries come together (much to the disappointment of William Saroyan)! However i want to comment on the lack of any kind of info about the games! Aren't they supposed to have a site that will have coverage of all the games and activities?

What the hell are you talking about? A fight like that could have happened between [two] people from Yerevan, Gyumir, Los Angeles, Boston, or your home town. Don't forget fights like this happen during Armenian, Chinese, Latin American...olympic games.

Serious Games: 38 new cities represented in latest “Unity Through Sport”

By Suren Musayelyan

ArmeniaNow reporter

A senior Pan-Armenian Games organizer has called the latest sport festival in Yerevan a great success, but admitted some shortcomings and omissions in organization.

Roland Sharoyan, the first vice-chairman of the Pan-Armenian Games World Committee, told the media on Tuesday that the expectations of the organizers have been fully met as the fourth competitions bringing together Armenians from all over the globe saw an increased number of athletes and expanded geography.

With spectacular opening and closing ceremonies and at times equally spectacular sporting events in-between, the 4th Pan-Armenian Games in Yerevan on August 18-26 had brought together more than 2,500 amateur, semi-professional and professional athletes representing 94 Armenian communities worldwide. They competed in 10 sports, including football, futsal, badminton, basketball, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, field and track athletics, swimming and chess.

An estimated 80 million drams (or some $240,000) were spent on the organization and holding of the Games.

“Pan-Armenian Games play a considerable role and have already won a place in Armenian life,” Sharoyan said.

The executive, who stood at the sources of the Games back in 2001, added that apart from being a great sporting celebration, pan-Armenian games appear to have become one of the best practical means to bring closer and deepen the relations between Armenia and its Diaspora.

“The motto of the Pan-Armenian Games World Committee, which is ‘Unity Through Sport’, has become a reality,” he said.

Representatives of 38 cities, including 27 outside Armenia, for the first time took part in the Games this year.

Yet, Sharoyan says, one of the organizers’ omissions this year is that the delegation of Moscow, which is home to one of the largest Armenian communities in the world, consisted only of five sportsmen.

Sharoyan also admitted some cases of bad refereeing during the Games, but disagreed with criticism that refereeing was generally poor.

“In fact, the 4th Pan-Armenian Games have proved to be the best by the level of referees in the history of holding the games,” he said, adding that complaints of bad refereeing are not uncommon even for the world’s biggest sporting events, including soccer world cups.

Despite several incidents of unsportsmanlike behavior that marred the otherwise amicable atmosphere of the Games, Sharoyan said this year’s competitions showed an improvement in terms of discipline, as brawls and fights between sportsmen happened more often in the past.

In particular, during the 4th Pan-Armenian Games the men’s basketball team from Yerevan and the soccer team from Stepanakert were disqualified from the competitions for provoking fistfights during their matches. They face a ban for participation in the next Games due in 2011.

Meanwhile, the Games have shown that Armenia-grown athletes outdo their compatriots from abroad in most sports. Teams representing Armenian cities and towns took the top three places by the number of medals won on aggregate in 10 events. The team of Yerevan won the overall champion’s title by far – 36 gold, 22 silver and 19 bronze medals. Vanadzor (4-8-4) and Gyumri (3-0-3) finished second and third, respectively.

The Pan-Armenian Games World Committee hopes the number of sporting events, participants and Armenian communities represented in the Games will further increase in four years’ time. Meanwhile, it has been decided to try to organize Pan-Armenian Games also in winter sports. If resources are found, the first such games may be held in 2009.
