MJ Posted December 20, 2002 Report Share Posted December 20, 2002 I just found that the package of 100% whole wheat stone ground sesame crackers I have bought today is produced by the Ak-mak Bakeries of Soojian family of Sanger, CA (apparently it has been established in 1893). It refers to the crackers as "Original Armenian Cracker Bread." It even has the Mt. Ararat on the package. So, "ac-mak" it is - original Armenian bread. Just had some last night as a matter of fact (as I manned the Armenian booth and our kids school International Day festivities)! I also brought along a bunch of other stuff for the booth - incl flag, books/pamplets, art/ceramic work, dried apricots - etc....but for some reason they were'nt to keen on my giving out samples of Raki (at the elementary school...)!!! Get you Turkish dictionary out and look up "ahmak" In coarse Anatolian Turkish "akhmakh" means stupid. In the new Kemaliam it is written as "ahmak". Who is the stupid one? Yet another case of Armenian stupidity in line of bringing khorovats to America and calling ot shish kebab, bringing sour milk and calling it yoghurt (Not that this is a Turkish word, it is Armenian), bringing preserved meat and calling it basturma instead of apukht (anep/uncooked). We brought "sourj" to america and called Turkish coffee. Yes, "ekmek" is the Turkish for bread, but why did we have to call it that instead of just "hats"? And..... we pride ourselves for being the first to cultivate wheat and inventing the art of baking bread. How turkified are we?? Even down to the basics of bread and butter/hats ou panir?? Don't answer!! BTW, I have never seen "akmak". I would not buy or eat it it even if my life were in jeopardy, I was brought up on hats ou panir and it will stay such. We bring bread/crackers to America and call it by its furkish name. WE bring to America "apukht" and we say it is "basterma". WE bring to America yoghurt ( an Armenian word) and tell them it is furkish. We bring sourj to America and call it "furkish coffee", we bring stuffed eggpmnts and call it "dolma", we bring stuffed grapeleaves(terev/patouk and call it it "sarma". Is there a limit to STUPIDITY??? I wish I could find that story on the Discovery channel where this obviously Armenian baker says that lavash is a "Lebanese bread". What is the definition of STUPID? I'll say a lot of them. I hate the slang PROB like can we taste it? examples are too many.While we can make fun of those immigrants the truth is Armenians from Armenia majority use lot of none Armenians words. or even better why are haystansis so hang up on Turkish music even playing in our weddings!I just hate that garbage. Well said Sahak. Can we all please get over that two hundred year old EXCUSE that our mother tongue was furkish, that we did not know Armenian at the time. Two thousand years ago our ancestors did not speak Armenian as we know it now. They sopoke Urartuan, Hittite, Assyrian, Greek, Latin until Mashtots decided to take action. Then we spoke Persian Latin and and Arabic. Yes, neither did my immediate ancestors know the Armenian language as we do now.. How does that excuse me, after more than a hundred years to still speak furkish? Why don't those sunshanordis learn to speak Armenian? WHAT IS OUR EXCUSE NOW???!!! Why are we still naming our culture and cuisine in that cursed langauge? How much more ottomaized can we be? Where are we learning these furkish terms? Do we teach the furkish language in our schools, be they in the Diaspora or the Homeland? It seems we do, when we teach our children that stuffed eggplant is known as dolma, stuffed grape leaves is known as sarma and apukht is better known as basturma. Those shunshanordis!!! Take it as you please. Are those shunshanordis the furks or our ancestors who brought Armenian culture to the west and called them with furkish names and said they were furkish.
