Arpa
------------------------------------------------------------- the website you mentioned is not available. I have a question/ what is the meaning of the suffix STAN in Hayastan. I have read it somewhere in this hyeforum but I cannot find it again. From what country does it come ? Thank you. Stan stands for Ostan/Vostan that loosely means the home-"Land Of" whoever. Does anyone remember that song; "Hayastani vostan, Siroun Yerevan..."? Maybe we should consider renaming our Homeland Hay-Ostan/Հայ-Ոստան Of course! We know that a lot of people use the "stan" suffix, as in Aghgani-stan to Paki-stan** to Zului-stan****(no) to mean "the land of". Once again, the below Ajarian from the internet is incomplete. The hard copy goes on saying that "vostan/ostan/stan" is from the Pahlavi to mean "state/region/county/gavar" 10 ՈՍՏԱՆ «երեւելի՝ թագաւորական քաղաք» Փարպ. Խոր. Արծր. «արքունի, թագաւորական» Բուզ. It is common assumption that Pakistan means the "land of the clean/pak". Wrong! P A K istan stands for P=Punjab***, A=Assam, and K=Kashmir *** And, of course we know that "punj ab" means "five waters/rivers". **** You may think I am kidding. I am , yet consider that of all the people, we are one of the very few that refer to Ethiopia as "Habeshistan", from the Arabic Habash/Habesh to mean Abyssinia. Not to forget that we are one of the few people that call Virq /Vrastan, Greece/ Hounastan, China/ Chinastan and India/ Hndkastan (Hindustan?), Russia/ Roussastan, Parskia/Persia/ Parskastan. And America /Amerikstan/Bushistan?? From Ostan to... ՈՍՏԻԿԱՆ/Ostikan/Vosdigan that nowadays we use to mean police, is in fact from the Pahlavi to mean governor.
