"legend" is from the Latin "legere"(lire in French), to read, to relate, totell(story). It is usually used in reference to romanticization of historical events for which there may be no evidence or proof. The word, just as in the Armenian has two main connotations; one, as seen above, it has a negative effect and, two, it is more often than not used to describe people and events of "legendary" and epic proportions.

Similarly, in the Armenian "araspel" and "araspelakan" are used in exactly the same ways. One dictionary has these synonyms; Araspel=ditsabanutyun (mythology), avandutyun(tradition), avandazruyts, zrutsavep, avandavep, ditsavep(epic)and simply zruyts(see above to "read", "to relate").

In the Armenian, just in the Latin "araspel" and "araspelakan" may be used to dismiss a story as baseless or to describe a bigger than reality figure, may they be past or present. One may say "Viktor Hambartsumyan@ ouner 'araspelakan gitakan *****r', or, that "Haik-i kajutyun@ 'araspelakan er' ". Legendary, almost unbelievable.

"Araspel", a native, proto-IndoEuropean Armenian word composed of the "ar" prefix and "spel", to talk, to tell, to relate. It is also seen in many IE languages, primarily in the west, it may have the form of "spel", "spil", "spiel" and many other variations. It is difficult to see the word in its pure form but when when it is used in conjunction it will be readily evident in words such as "God-spell"(Avetaran), Go-spel etc, or simply as in to cast a "spell" (word, curse).

Yes, Mossy there is a native Armenian word for "legend/ary".

It is "araspel-akan".

And.... this is no ARASPEL!!! :0 :0
