MosJan Posted June 28, 2007 Report Share Posted June 28, 2007 LEBANESE ARMENIAN PURCHASES EQUIPMENT FOR DIGITALIZATION FOR MATENADARAN * Having followed the recent events connected with the digitalization of the ancient manuscripts of Matenadaran, Pierre Gouyoumjian, Lebanese Armenian, decided to be useful for Matenadaran. About a fortnight ago, he met with the leadership of Matenadaran and told them that he had decided to purchase digitalization equipment for the institute of Ancient Manuscripts. Gouyoumjian and the scholars from Matenadaran had already jointly discussed the programs for digitalization of the manuscripts and creation of electronic libraries. A week ago, he arrived in Yerevan and brought the abovementioned equipment to Matenadaran. According to Guyoumjian, the equipment purchased for Matenadaran is more powerful than that in "Hill" American Museum of Manuscripts. Arshak Banouchian, acting head of Matenadaran, they have already submitted the sketches of the digitalization project to RA Government, but the project will be fully elaborated only after three months. Gouyoumjian and Banouchian signed an agreement on exploitation of the newly purchased equipment that will be tested in the photo-laboratory of Matenadaran for 2 months. Banoiuchian emphasized the importance of having such equipment in Matanadaran. "As soon as I heard about the recent developments with the digitalization of the Matenadaran manuscripts, I decided to purchase the best equipment and bring that to Armenia, as I know that we have great IT specialists in Yerevan who will be able to carry out the digitalization process at best. Having used this equipment, we will be able to define in 2 months how much time we will need to digitalize the entire collection of unique manuscripts," Gouyoumjian said. It is expected that the digitalization program will be discussed at Matenadaran in August, then at the relevant Ministry and at the Government. MosJan Posted October 6, 2007 Report Share Posted October 6, 2007 Copied books to be digitalized The Early Manuscripts Electronic Library (EMEL) will work with the Matenadaran in the digitalization of old books copied by hand (before the existence of printing presses). The number of these books, according to Matenadaran director Hrachia Tamrazyan, reaches around 100. Representatives of EMEL, during a recent visit in Yerevan, attained a preliminary agreement to start bringing the needed equipment for digitalization to the Matenadaran by next year, so that the digitalization of manuscripts would then take place in Yerevan, and to keep the copies only at the Matenadaran. In other words, in the words of the museum’s director, the American organization will have nothing to do with the looking after of the manuscripts. The up-to-date equipment, with their infrared and purple beams, will make the lower layers of the manuscripts both visible and legible. Experts from the organization will teach Armenian experts how to operate the digitalization equipment. EMEL also plans similar projects in neighboring Georgia. We remind that in May of this year the Matenadaran considered the contract with the American Hill organization to digitalize Armenian manuscripts as null and void. For this purpose, the Matenadaran plans to create working groups of experts to study the issue of doing the digitalizing in Armenia. In any event, the Armenian National Archives are in discussions with French and German organizations about the importance of digitalization and the bringing of equipment to Armenia for this process. Yervant1 Posted January 18, 2008 Report Share Posted January 18, 2008 MANUSCRIPTS OF MATENADARAN TO BE RENOVATED WITH HELP OF JAPANESE SPECIALISTS By Rouzan Poghosyan AZG Armenian Daily 18/01/2008 By the memorandum signed between the Government of Japan and the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts Matenadaran, equipment and necessary materials for about $23 thousand will be allocated for the renovation of the ancient manuscripts of Matenadaran. The Japanese Government paid attention to Matenadaran for the first time in 2003, when Japanese experts brought renovation equipment and materials for about half a million dollars to Armenia and taught the Armenian employees of Matenadaran the renovation methods. Yesterday, Hiriko Hazumi, Japanese Ambassador to Russia, and Yukiko Mizuno, second secretary of Japanese Ambassador to Russia, visited Matenadaran to sign the memorandum with the Armenian scholars. Sen Arevshatian, Adviser of Matenadaran's Director, Arshak Banouchian, Deputy Director of Matenadaran, as well as Shoushanik Khachikian, Scholarly Secretary, met the Japanese delegation. Hrachya Tamrazian, Director of Matenadaran, wasn't present at the meeting due to his participation in the international conference held in Antilias. Sen Arevshatian emphasized that they greatly appreciate the assistance displayed by the Japanese Government. He added that thanks to this cooperation the ancient manuscripts of Matenadaran will live a new life. Arshak Banouchian informed with delight that the number of Japanese tourists visiting Matenadaran increased in the course of the last few years. "They say that where the Japanese tourists go there can be great opportunities for development of tourism," Youkiko Mizouno stated this. He added that the Japanese people are very interested in cultures of other nations, as they believe this is a good way for spiritual development. Moreover, he emphasized that this very approach is essentially reflected in the governmental policy of Japan. Mr. Mizouno also stated that his country's government takes numerous efforts to preserve the culture of the developing countries and carries out many programs of the like in different developing countries. He also stated that the Government of Japan provided with necessary equipment not only Matenadaran, but also the Philharmonic Orchestra of Armenia, as well as the Opera and Ballet Theatre after Al. Spendiarian. In response to the question how well the Japanese people are familiarized with the Armenian culture, Mr. Mizouno added that few people know about the Armenian culture in Japan, as they aren't properly informed about our country.
