Guest Posted October 13, 2000 Report Share Posted October 13, 2000 Im sure most of you who live in the States or Europe get this, people taking you to be something other than Armenian, upon first appearance. I usually pass for Anglo, though people have said I look more Hungarian(the vague Asiatic slant to my eyes thanks to my Native American blood? Maybe.). Others take me to be a light Mexican with blue eyes (yes there are Mexicans with blue or green eyes!). I almost never (or never) have people think I am Armenian, including Armenians. Before I've got registered I've checked out some of the postings and I have to admit that by far this is one of the most intelligent forums.So, Hye to everyone! Dear Half Breed, When I came to US several months ago, people asked me whether I'm German, Irish or even Danish. I’m 6.2, white (well, I was – I live in TX), I have very blue eyes, aquiline high-bridged nose, long face and light brown hair (I hope this doesn’t sound like an advertisement). According to my family history I don’t have even a drop of foreign blood (at least for the last 1600 years). Back in Bulgaria where I came from I have few blond Armenian friends that also claim to be "pure" Armenians. (fortunately or unfortunatey many halfs or even "odars" are better Armenians than many Aryans).I would appreciate very much if anyone can render English translation of the “Story of Vahagn”. Thanks. Farsi, I didnt know you had blue eyes, and slant,(well mabye that) I always imagined you as being dark-skinned olive, but I wasnt quite sure.. As most of you know I am greek and armenian. I dont know if there is a better way of putting it, but when I'm with armenian people I look greek and when I'm with greek people i look armenian. Or when I'm walking down the street I get quite a bit of stares sometimes because people cant really place what nationality they think i might be. They ask sometimes. Sometimes i like it but when it gets a bit much i get sick of it. What it is really is that where about s my friend lives is very "white" (english white) and a bit like "it's your foreigner, innit?" ignorance. Well, I have got black curls, black eyebrows and eyelashes. (When my hairs a different colour it's from the bottle!) my skin is light olive , with a bit of pink in the cheeks when I am happy or embarrassed! (But it really darkens up a lot in the sun; I would go brown under a light bulb) my eyes are hazel and slanting, with a bit of a longish face. my Aunt and Uncle have got really long horsy faces, though, not as much as them. I am not very tall! Actaully I was taken for Italian once by a hairdresser but that was only cause of my first name sounding catholic. You need a star Armenian-Greek footie player to change all that It seems more and more, Los Angeles is dividing on economic lines, rather than racial (although the two are highly correlated!). Even our 1992 riots turned into class warfare (blacks & latinos vs. anglos & asians). Back to the subject of this thread, one of the few times I was recognized as Armenian and it wasn't good was about about 17-18 years ago. I walked into a liquor store with hair spiked, painted & studded punk leather jacket and probably a bit of eye pencil, and the store owner said, "Arrmeeenyans doo thees sort of thing to dem selves?" He probably went home and told his family that the Armenian race in America is doomed. The kicker is nowadays when I see wannabe gang members Hyes in Glendale, I know how the liquor store owner felt!!!!!!! What goes around, comes around. Yeah.Everything that everyone has said on this thread , colour wise, have been mistaken for basically the medditereanean and middle eastern type of looks. But what makes me stick out in my fmily is really my features. They're not the same. Even my dad and relatives look more greek than me. My brother looks english. (Yeah, there ARE quite a fewmeddittereanean and middle eastern ppl with light eyes and hair.) It's not all that unusual as some ppl seem to think! But if you put a big golden cross and a chain and cut his hair very short... then definettly : ) Actually in England almost everyone who saw me thought that i am Turkish... Armenian people are just not known in the world, most people heard of it but never met or have an idea where it is situated... so, we look anything: Turkish, a bit as Arab, iranian, Greek... My son actually looks more Armenian than me, just in an atypical way. He really has olive skin, whereas mine has a little of the Italian pink.
