MosJan
New Armenian Town Being Built in California 12.01.2007 14:31 GMT+04:00 Print version Send to mail In Russian In Armenian /PanARMENIAN.Net/ The new Armenian town development is bounded by inside Santa Clara, Highway 41, M Street and O Street. The 10-acre redevelopment project is becoming reality as the first building rises from an area once filled with the modest homes of Armenian immigrants. This will be the new home of Fresno's 5th District Court of Appeals. It will also be the anchor of the 'Armenian Town' redevelopment project, envisioned as a mix of office and retail, as well as public open space and parking. Jeanette Jurkovich, Friends of Armenian Town, says, "Cities across America embrace old and new development. They know it's not an either/or." Jurkovich says these five homes from the old Armenian Town were to become part of this project. Jurkovich says this area on the 10 acre site across from the Armenian Church would create a bridge from the past to the present. And once restored, could become home to retail, restaurants or art galleries, reports ABC

annannimusss
This is here,in my hometown where I live.It is moving slowly but surely, and when it is done it will be either the most beautiful part of downtown,or one of the most beautiful parts of downtown. ArmoBlog
I blogged about this. What's funny is how some Azeri news sources took it to mean that Armenians were building a town for them to live in, exclusively!
AntranigBey
They'll pioneer the eventual regeneration of downtown Fresno that they've been planning for decades now. Unfortunately, its far away from all the wealth and close to all the bad neighborhoods, but maybe like the Tower District they'll be able to stand independent and be a success. The problem is getting all those cheap Fresno Armenian Farmers to invest in their communities.
SHENGAVIT
I don't like that it is built not near Glendale or Los Angeles.
SanVal
There's already a "Little Armenia" in Hollywood. isn't that enoug? At some point--if you go too far--you'll only create animosity. Remember the conflict that "Little Cambodia" caused in Long Beach? Given the history of Armenian Americans in California, it makes sense to create one in Fresno. Armenak
Little Armenia is just a name. Most of the shops and stuff are Thai or Mexican.
SHENGAVIT
hell no, almost all the shops are owned or operated by Armenians. the only mexican shop you can find is Tako Bell Food places, which are not shops.
annannimusss
AntranigBey,are you a fellow Fresnan? Shengavit,it is close to LA and Glendale, only 3 and a Half our drive.
nairi
I thought it was part of the plan to rebuild the setting Saroyan often used in his works. It's meant to boost tourism in Fresno, in the same way that Hannibal has been designed to attract Mark Twain fans. Next thing you know, there will be an "Aram Garoghlanian's Town" ride in Disneyland. "Pay no attention to it."
annannimusss
Its not for Tourism,it is a business park that has the Court of the Appeals as the main building.Plus some nice office buildings. If the plan goes on to what we Armenians want, the Asbarez-The Armenian Club there will be torn down and completely re-built with the old bakery still standing and another old historical building still standing. annannimusss
No,I have not really been through Glendale, only twice and that was in a pickup truck and a van.But no offense to anyone, the Stanci stereotype is that they drive Black Mercedes or BMW's that is why I said that. And by the way I did not know that the Tata concert was only in Fresno, and it is 60$ a ticket. This is what I heard.
