MosJan
ARMENIAN CHESS PLAYERS ARE LEADERS IN WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD * "It will be very hard to prevent the Armenian chess players to celebrate the second uninterrupted Olympic victory in the 38th World Chess Olympiad which is being held in the town of Dresden, Germany. The circumstance that before the tournament the Armenian men chess team had the international ninth rating was misleading and the Armenian chess players were underestimated", Russian sport media reported. "Armenia continues to surprise the chess world. Armenian chess players did not only concede in competition with the Russian team but also were able to win them. In the only efficient match of the competition, the Armenian chess player Gabriel Sargsian simply paralyzed his rival Alexander Grishchuk and enjoyed a brilliant victory", German sport media reported, according to Armenpress news agency. The Armenian chess players won 2.5:1.5 the Russian team in the seventh round of the Olympiad and became the only leader of the Olympic tournament with 13 points. German first team, Israeli and French teams share 2-4 places with 12 points. In the women tournament the Armenian chess players won 3:1 the Austrian team in the seventh round and yet share the 9-13 places having 10 points. The leader among the women tournament is the Chinese team having 13 points, followed by the Ukrainian team which has 12 points and the third comes Russia with 11 points. In the eighth round the Armenian women team will play with the Azerbaijani one.

DominO123
where did you read this? official site. We can still win, tomorow Israel will confront Ukraine, Armenia will confront Serbia. So they will confront a stronger team. If they draw and Armenia win, Armenia will retake the first position and only one day will remain. DominO123
Armenia back in first place as it beat Serbia where as Israel lost to Ukraine. It's not very good for the last match. Armenia against China, Ukraine against against US and Israel againt Netherlands. Armenia will be playing with a much stronger team than them. This way of matching pairs when they reduced the number of games isen't fair, Israel played with more number of weaker teams than Armenia and won't play Russia. nairi
I'm not sure I agree with this system either. Maybe an elimination system of quarters, semis, and finals like football or tennis would be fairer. Armenia played the top four highest ranked teams (Russia, Ukraine, China, Azerbaijan), whereas Israel and Russia only played one of them (Ukraine) and Ukraine only two (Russia and China). That's hardly fair to decide a winner. Edit: China only played one highest ranked team, Ukraine. That's hardly fair either! nairi
i think it's fair enough... armenia played weaker teams at the beginning too... But it also played against the four toughest teams, the only country to do so. In fact Armenia played against SIX countries higher rated than itself (Russia, Ukraine, China, Azerbaijan, France, Israel). Israel played against only one (Ukraine) and so did China (Russia). And now, in this very last round, Armenia has to play against the third highest ranked team (China), whereas Israel gets to play against the Netherlands (ranked 20), Ukraine against the US (10), and Russia against Spain (12). That's the difference.

Nané
Armenia Chess Win Sparks Nationwide Elation By Tatevik Lazarian, and Harry Tamrazian in Prague Armenia have repeated their own success of two years ago to win the second World Chess Olympiad title in a row at the biannual event in Germany. The news from Dresden on Tuesday sparked celebrations among chess fans in Armenian capital Yerevan and throughout the country. Many of them had followed live the final round action between Armenia and China in a closely packed Chess House in central Yerevan. The long-awaited victory was met with prolonged jubilations. Armenia’s men, the winning team of the previous World Chess Olympiad in Turin in 2006, beat China 2.5-1.5 in the eleventh and final round of the tournament to secure an overall victory in Dresden and heroes’ welcome at home. Grandmaster Levon Aronian, Armenia’s current No. 1, drew with China’s Wang Yue on the top board, with Vladimir Hakobian, Gabriel Sargsian and Tigran L. Petrosian finishing the job respectively against Bu Xiangzhi, Ni Hua and Li Chao B. Armenia’s only winning point, however, came from Petrosian on the fourth board. Speaking to RFE/RL from Dresden, Armenian Chess Federation deputy head Vanik Zakarian described the win as fantastic for a small country like Armenia. “It is a very amazing result, a fantastic result,” he commented. President Serzh Sarkisian, who also heads Armenia’s Chess Federation, has been in Dresden since Monday to encourage the team before the crucial match against China. According to Zakarian, Sarkisian had made the symbolic first move for Aronian, who played with black pieces. Before that, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov did the same on behalf of Aronian’s Chinese opponent. “Our team had been seeded as ninth at this Olympiad. But there is no other team among the Olympiad participants that would have the same solidarity and level of organization. The victory comes very natural,” Zakarian added. Armenians have traditionally excelled in chess, which is one of the most popular sports in Armenia. The country’s leading players enjoy domestic stardom compared to that of top soccer players abroad.
