Never mind the Istanbul, Aleppo/Beyrut, Yerevan variants, before I decide to write in the Z (Zulu) script as opposed to the A (Armenian). Arpa Posted November 29, 2006 Report Share Posted November 29, 2006 Can someone shed light on the variance between the -ian (եան) vs. -yan (յան) in Armenians surnames came to be? It is apparent that today, the -yan suffix is almost exclusiveily used by Armenians in Armenia (or originating from there). Whereas the -ian suffix is used by Diasporan Armenians. But how, why, and when did this differentiation begin? Not so fast please. Are we not ignoring a sizable Armenian community that uses neither -yan nor -ian? How many watched the telethon? When I first saw the names of some donors, like SarkisJan I thought they were using the suffix as we do here on the forum, until I realized that those donors were from Germany and that they were spelling their names like HagopJan,, BedrosJan. It took me a while when I finally realized they were using the German J as in - “JAN” to sound like “yan” like in Johanna/Yohanna/Joanne. How do Armenians in Holland and Denmark spell their surnames?
