But my exploerer.exe starts consuming all of my cpu out of the blue. I have no idea why this is. I got firewall, av, spybot etc etc. This must be a problem with explorer. It just keeps hogging my cpu even when i'm not doing anything. I restart it with the taskmanager, but 5 minutes later the same problem. anyone else experiences such problems? Your system is infected with spyware man. Get spysweeper it's the best and scan the system or reinstall everything from scrap. By the way don't use that crap (explorer). Hytga, when was the last time you created a system restore point? If it's recent, you may wish to use XP'S system restore to "repair" your windows installation. Sip Posted November 10, 2006 Report Share Posted November 10, 2006 I had a problem like that once and it seemed to have to do with certain media files formats (AVI) that windows explorer was trying to open to get properties out of it. It seems like explorer does this even if you don't try to open the file or anything. So your problem might be related to codecs and windows media player problems. But in my case, the problem was only when I tried to go into certain folders that had the media files in it. I upgraded some of my codecs and it got fixed ... plus there is a way to disable windows from trying to preview the media files but I forget how that goes. Sip Posted November 10, 2006 Report Share Posted November 10, 2006 By the way, even though it's probably not related, this is what I was talking about: ------ "Windows XP Explorer has a 'feature' to provide a preview in the Details box on the left of the file you have selected, if it's supported. Image files, HTML pages, video clips, MP3s, etc are all previewed (even with the folder view open). If you have a large movie clip and it either is corrupt (ie. no index from a partial download) or it uses an unsupported codec, then Explorer tries to load the whole file. This can slow your computer a lot and prevent deleting/renaming/moving/etc the file until it's finished. Simply do the following steps: 1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter) 2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll 3) To readd image preview, type and hit enter regsvr32 shimgvw.dll 4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll 5) To readd media preview, type and hit enter regsvr32 shmedia.dll -------------------- The fix for Windows XP not letting you delete .avi Avi files (divx) can be trouble in xp. there is a fix to let xp behave much better so it's possible to move or delete large avi files. The obnoxious bug in XP that causes Explorer to read the entire contents of broken AVI files before allowing any access to them is caused by bad behavior of shmedia.dll. To correct this misbehavior in Windows XP, remove the following registry key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesCLSID{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}InProcServer32 This will prevent Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to file property queries on these files. Just an extra note, if you do a "search" for this key it will not be found, look for it manually it is very easy to find. As always newbie or not, if you FUBAR your registry its your own fault. It does however seem to be assodiated with programs that use divx codec or diivex files. I've run a few updates and it's less frequent, though not gone complitely. anyways. about the browsers, i like ie7 but i like opera more. i got 1 gig of memory and 2ghz cpu on my laptop but compared to opera it takes ie forever to load. imo opera is the best. all they need to do is make it more activex friendly. I don't know which codec is playing my divx files these days though since I got so many As far as "DivX", I just never cared for the way they try to hide some of their options or some of the default things they do. A lot of things can be disabled and removed etc (like their annoying logo that pops up on playback) but why should I have to go through all the trouble of disabling all that stuff when no sane person would ever care about seeing a stupid logo for example pop up uninvited? Error 404 Posted November 14, 2006 Report Share Posted November 14, 2006 Is explorer.exe the only process crashing? If you are getting random errors it also could be the RAM memory.
