gamavor
In brief... Madrid, 19 September: A resolution on the so-called Armenian genocide submitted earlier to the Spanish parliament has been withdrawn after the Turkish embassy in Madrid held talks with Spanish officials. The resolution was submitted to the Spanish parliament by two deputies of the Republican Left of Catalonia Party (ERC) last June. Turkish Ambassador in Madrid Volkan Vural got in touch with authorities in the Spanish Foreign Ministry and Parliament and also sent letters to the two ERC deputies and Chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Commission Josep Antoni Duran Lleida. In his letters sent to Spanish officials, Volkan emphasized how wrong such an initiative is and that the resolution would harm Turkish-Spanish relations if adopted at the parliament. Ambassador Vural held a tete-a-tete meeting with ERC deputy Maria Bonas and convinced her to withdraw the resolution on the so-called Armenian genocide. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Turkish Daily News , Turkey Sept 25 2006 Camiel Eurlings, the Dutch member of the European Parliament who drafted a highly critical report on Turkey, said in an exclusive interview with the Turkish Daily News that he was not solely responsible for the final content of the report and pledged that he would do his best to have the issue rectified when the parliamentarians vote on it this week. The tone of Eurlings' report became even more critical when parliamentarians included amendments into the original document during debates in the Foreign Affairs Commission earlier this month, pressuring Turkey to recognize the alleged genocide of not only Armenians but also of Pontic Greeks and others. Eurlings admitted that the way his report was portrayed by the Turkish media had a negative effect, and he said, "If you were to read those lines as they appeared in the Turkish press, as a Turkish citizen you would be less ready to reform than more ready to reform." He said he hoped that the final vote in the European Parliament on Wednesday will put things right and that it "will bring the report completely in line with the way I drafted it." "That means we will take out the Armenian genocide as a precondition and go back to the original text of my report. We will also take out misunderstandings about genocide of Pontic Greeks and Assyrians as it was not in my original text," he points out. The Turkish Parliament is set to resume debates on a European Union-inspired reform package on Tuesday, and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan has signaled that his government is ready to consider amendments to Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK), criticized by the EU as restricting freedom of expression. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS: Now I can perfectly understand why Camiel Eurlings promised to "fix" the report. I also perfectly understand why Maria Bonas withdrew the draft of the resolution. What I don't understand is why both Camiel and Maria decided to put forward the issue of the recognition in their agenda and/or report? Europeans should make their minds. If they recognize the Genocide, they should impose the same condition to the perpetrator. If they don't ...via con dios. Let ti be that way. Soon or later we will nuke turkey anyway...
