Harut
21 June 2006 "All that is needed for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." -Edmund Burke Dear Sir or Madam: Crimes against humanity. Denial. Genocide. These are words that no human race should ever experience for as long as one should live. Yet, people all over the world continue encountering atrocities as well as are incessantly affected by the memory of genocide. Beginning with the Armenian Genocide of 1915 to that in Rwanda in 1994, the 20th century was marked by a level of human cruelty the world had never seen. As you read this letter, innocent victims are being systematically annihilated in Darfur, Sudan, sixty five years after the Holocaust and ninety one years after the Armenian Genocide. While history repeated itself several times during the previous century, it has also shown that when civil society is well-informed about such crimes, it is more likely to take an active stand against them. For crimes against humanity to cease, as human beings, we have an exclusive responsibility, an intrinsic obligation, and one mission awaiting its triumph. The United Armenian Students is in the midst of carrying out a colossal genocide recognition project called Journey for Humanity. A group of 7 committed individuals will march across our nation, from Downtown, Los Angeles, to WashingtonD.C. They will pass through twelve (12) states, covering over three thousand miles starting on June 27, 2006 to November 2006. The project's various committees have been working arduously on all aspects of the Journey, from routing, fundraising, publicizing, walkers' health maintenance, and community education, to rallies and logistics. The final element in substantiating our success is dependent upon getting the message out to the people. It is our objective to raise societal awareness through the media as well as through various human rights organizations that take place in educational and religious institutions. We are certain that in order to prevent future incidents, this event needs to be publicized expansively and supported tremendously. Hence, each and every one's cooperation and participation is considered necessary at this time. We need to receive involvement from you for this event to achieve its ultimate goal, therefore we ask you to join this cause with us. We encourage individuals such as yourself to support in any way possible, such as contributing financially or helping promote the walk on television, newspapers, radios, internet, and other channels that you may have access to. There are few days left until the launching of the Journey for Humanity. Please mark your calendars, take the day off and support the walkers as they begin to walk from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. on Tuesday, June 27, 2006. The significance of this project encompasses raising awareness of crimes against humanity and this cannot be done without the presence and participation of all mankind. A group of local political and religious leaders and other local dignitaries will join the walkers on the front lawn of the Los Angeles City Hall to initiate the journey. The ceremony will take place at 9:00 a.m., on June 27, 2006. Together, let us all join hands that day by walking alongside these devoted individuals and let's all wish them an unforgettable journey. We must recognize the wrongs of the past and bring this pertinent issue to the forefront of our collective consciousness. It can be done and we are committed to do so. Today, all human beings need to take on a more active role. We all collectively need to launch a Journey for Humanity.
