MrLion_2
First and foremost let me say hello to everyone in Hye forum because I am new in here. My concern is where is Armenian music going to be in 10 years. Let me also add that i am a singer and musician and the question always bothers me. Here we are 2001, and reflecting 20 years back in music I have found that there isn’t much change in the market. There is a big change however in the number of artists. I remember in 1979 when i came to the US there was 2 record companies that us Armenians had. There was Parseghian Records and Arka Records. A short while later PeKo records opened also. There where only a hand full of Armenian artists, you could of count them on 1 hand. There was Harout Pampoukjian, Paul BAghdadian (hes not dead) , Maxim, Yeghia , and Adiss, there where maybe a couple more but thats how far my memory goes back. Now in 2001, we have 7 big record companys and i cant even count how many singers. The biggest record company today is Parseghian records. There is 1 more company out there that i think will in time take over the market and that company will be GTAK Records that of coarse is my own opinion. Our music has not takin us far, all it has done is add more players to the game. If we compare the songs we had back in 1980 to what we listen to today we will notice that the singers that we have had back then are still here and making records, but the new artists we have heard two years come and go. All the music we here now is just the reflection of the singer that released a cd before him. Same song different words. And the funny part is that we still buy these cd`s anyway. There are a couple of artists that are true to the game. Harout Pampoukjian being one of them, and Pual the other. The main problem we have in the market is selection. There is no selection process to what does or doesn’t make it as a selling cd. Anything is thrown in the market and sold.I would like to know what my fellow musicians and music listeners think. I would like to hear some feedback. Thanks
Pilafhead
Welcome, Mr. Lion 2!! (Is there really a Mr. Lion 1? ) I couldn't agree with you more. It has been 20 years of the same stuff over and over and over and over and over... I think it was MosJan who mentioned the costs involved in putting out a new Armenian record/CD and therefore, no one wants to take a financial risk on putting out something different. The US/Canada-based Armenian music is pretty much crap. I hate to say it, but I think it has been from the beginning for Parseghian, ARKA, Pe-Ko, etc. I do like some of it, but because it's Armenian, not because it's necessarily good musically. What I am not clear on, and I think we actually discussed this here once before, is what is the Armenian music that is coming out of Armenia? Clouding the issue is that the music coming out of Armenia is obviously also targetted to the Diaspora and Los Angeles in particular. Mike BTW, I try to buy every Armenian album I can find on vinyl. I went to Parseghian one time and walked out with a box of sealed LPs for $1 each. I tried to do the same with Pe-KoO, but the store containing all their remaining vinyl burned down. Harut
if we keep the same paste, especially in Diaspora, it's going to end up in garbageland or in forest lawn. [ May 24, 2001: Message edited by: Harut ]
Kazza
No Mike I doubt there is a Lion 1! But perhaps the lion2 ate the lion1 Please dont encourage him to be weird like you! buying vinyl records everyone knows what you are like by now dont they Pillafyjan? I'm sure we can all come up with some ideas before it all goes to garbage wasteland. I think the music is fine as it is, but needs some improvement. Pilaf, you could start a punk/mods band! We could do the Hay Spandeau Ballet online MP3, what do you say?

koko
I don´t know much about the armenian music thats been released in America, but the music I'v heard sounds quite the same. I always tought that armenians were the best with arts and music. I do still to, to some extent. Popular music of armenians today is nothing i´d listen to. I bealieave that we are capable of doing much better music. Students in armenia want to make great careers, and there are already many big singers/musicians. Many would choose a education wich can assure them of a safer future, than that of a musician. With the unstable labour market, it's wise to educate so you will have a stabil work, maybe move out of the country, to make a living. SO who are the ones making the music?? I have one good CD from armenia, with an Ara Gevorkian/Grigorian(?).His first sound -track Sardarapad is pretty taseful, tough I think that with better technical instruments the sound could improve. I'll be back to finish my thoughts about the subject, later...
