couple of days ago i was chating with an azeri from iran and he was trying to explain me than Duduk isn't pure Armenian instrument.

he was saying that it was originated among kurds and azeris.

of course i don't believe him but he made me to think about this.

do you guys know about the real origin of Duduk?

what it is, i still think Duduk has Armenian sound.

Dear Harut,

I think it is always difficult to point the origin of a musical instrument to one people only. Especially when talking about a region with so diverse ethnicity. It is probably as valid to claim it as Armenian only as is claiming it as Turkish (highly unlikely, given their history) and Kurdish.

By the way at Vernisage, in Yerevan, you can find a master duduk maker. He has made Duduks for Djivan Gasparyan. His Duduks have been exported to the US, SAM duduks.

I always thought that Duduk was Armenian. It is unfortunate that Duduk is not and Armenian word, but a Russian one if I am not mistaken.

Here is a brief history about the Duduk from Garni.com

-----------------

No other musical instrument is able to convey the emotions of the Armenian people so honestly and eloquently as the duduk, Born in the early eons of Armenian history, it is purely Armenian. Because of its evocative and colorful timbre and warm sound, the duduk has become part of everyday life in Armenia. Today, no festive occasion, wedding reception or family feast is complete without a dudukist.

The duduk is a form of oboe hand-made almost always of apricot wood, with a 1,500-year history behind it. the duduk is strictly Armenian. Traveling Armenians have taken it to Persia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, the Middle East and as far as the Balkans, where derivatives are played. The instrument itself is simply a hollow pipe with eight finger holes on the upper side and one thumb hole on the bottom. It has a warm, soft, slightly nasal timbre, but it is capable of a wide-range of melodies and drone notes sustained for long periods of time. It is invariably played with the accompaniment of a second 'dum duduk,' which gives the music an energy and tonic atmosphere, changing the scale harmoniously with the principal duduk.

The duduk is built in three sizes, ranging from 11 to 16 inches. It requires a specific type of double reed, categorized as a split or slit-tube reed. As a musical instrument, it has not changed through the centuries, but the manner of playing it has been perfected and its sound has been improved. Its range is only one octave; however, it requires considerable skill to play, - its dynamics controlled by constantly adjusting the lips and fingers. The tuning is basically untempered and diatonic, though chromatic notes may be obtained by partially covering the finger holes.

The duduk repertoire consists of folk ballads as well as upbeat dance music. Composers have even written orchestral pieces for the instrument.

Matenadaran is one of the only places that you can fine old Armenian books ( Magarats ), one of this magarats that is close to 2800 years old ( i was told by the matenadaran guide) has a detailed picture of 2 Duduk player that are holding a duduks, one is a duduk that’s looks like it’s made of a reed cane , in the background there is a apricot tree and the fruits are on it.

In sardarapat museum, there is a big section of Armenian instruments, and on of the oldest piece is a duduk that’s close to 2800-3000 years old, this instrument is made of a reed cane it’s a one piece duduk, the reed and the body are one...

In 1903 Gomidas ( Komitas Vartapet ) has recorded the descriptions of Armenian instruments and fingering charts for , 5 Shvis , 3 Srings, 2 Zurna’s, 2 Paku’s, 4 ParkaPzuks, 8 duduk , A-D-C-G-B-Bb-G piccolo-F and duduk fingering chart which was later used and modified my Master Karlen (MKS) and Suren ( SAM ) to 38 new key's

naw you cen get duduks starting at piccolo G-F<->up to<-> BAss duduk

This description is in Armenian national museum, in Yerevan.

I own over 80 duduks my self made by different master in different times, as old us 200 years old as new as 20 days old.

i do have 2 duduk looking instruments , one is made in turkey ( maye ) the other is made in Japan made of a jade ( much smaller in size and sharper in sound )

after searching for 4 years i have found 3 masters that are the best, the Grandfather of duduk makers Master Karlen (MKS) and Master Suren (SAM) and at last Master Ruban (RR Shvi Rubo) and by being one of the only duduk importers to USA i do offer this instruments, with a 100% Made in Armenia and made by an Armenian, 100% Armenian Duduks to all.

Instruments that I offer are used round the world by the best duduk players, and every day I get a phone call that tells me that one has got hold of a duduk mad in istambul that those not sound good or made in Iran that has no sound at all,

As of SAM – I have been looking for his instruments and him for long time.

Sam’s instruments are same us MKS, SAM is the one and the only Student that Master Karlen MKS has ever had.

As you know I was in Armenia for some time , and most of that time I have spend finding new duduk masters , and one of my best findings was master SAM ( Suren ) This master is the only one that knows the "secrets of MKS duduks" and the only student that MKS has ever had, he has helped MKS to developed most of the MKS instruments wit MKS , ( some say that he was Maestro Karlens Right hand ) . His instruments are 99.9% same as MKS instruments.

I will get you some more info as I go on exploring his instruments, more pictures and moreeeeeeeeeeee~~~~~ ,

And one last think stay away from Vernisaje , you will find so many MKS and Sam stemped instruments that are just a another souvenir !!!

Boros Jan, Jivan is using Duduks mad by 3 masters #1 MKS #2 SAM #3 Hovsep (AKA Rabizi Hosep), Most of the time duduks are made and tuned by MKS, Jivan tunes his duduks time to time, he has a handicap of using his pinkie finger from botem to top.

Movses jan, I agree with you. I did not mean to say that Duduk is a Russian instrument, all I was saying that "Duduk" the word, comes from a Russian word(i think). I think we should use the Arenian word for it, but because I am an idiot I do not know the proper name.

I think the proper name is "tsiranapogh" or something like that.

Mos, do you sell Duduks in USA? or are you a collector.

By the way, I grew up just by Matenadaran. and I am going back in a month and will stay only 1 building from it.

Why on earth did I decide to write about duduk ? It is like my 6 year ole nephew playing chess against Kasparov .

Thanks for the heads up on Duduk, but the SAM guy at Vernisage claimed, and even had all kinds of articles that he was the real one. Old man with lots of articles, pictures. OK, maybe I was taken for a ride...
