Guest
lol, first a bit of bragging: my friend Narek is a member of IO...i'm so proud of them, they've been doing this for a long time now.. Alright, now the Hokis performance at the UCLA ASA dance: in a word, what a joke! They have absolutely no stage presence whatsoever, they voices get drowned out by the music (when playing live), the girl is barely 5 feet tall and the guys are all over 6 feet, which makes them look ridiculous on stage, and their music....what music??? That was the criticism. And now the praise: lol...I got a kick out of a song they did about the overprotective dad and the not so pure girl...lol This was rather tasteless, to my mind. They could have worded this song better, much better (you should've seen the very surprised reactions from a lot of guys on the floor, they couldn't believe what they were hearing...they even booed the band) But I liked that they were addressing this issue, which makes me think that they'll address others equally vital to the youth in the diaspora. They also called for greater unity among the hayastantsis, parskahyes and beirutsis. That was cute too. Anyway, they impressed me as a rather political band...lol I like what they're trying to accomplish, I just didn't like them sidenote: there were people there that would have otherwise never gone to an ASA dance... I ran into at least three, Narek the ultra unconventional/un-armenian guy from IO included. Lol, I couldn't stop laughing, I'm going to be teasing him about this forever and he knows it. So that's the power of Hokis, I suppose; everyone was curious about who they were, myself included. And I think a lot of people went home with mixed feelings, myself included. Well, that's Gayane's take on Hokis.

After seeing their song from the Music Awards, I decided on skipping taking the missus to the show with IO at Martini Lounge. We ended up driving around Hollywood, West LA and Santa Monica looking for Irish pubs with music! Not the best-planned night out...Funny you know IO. I can't remember how I stumbled across them. There seems to be zero Armenian influence in their music. What other local Armenian bands are there? I think there's one called "one.five" or something like that?
