By CLAUDIA PESCHIUTTA DOWNTOWN -- Peter Bahlawanian is pursuing a big dream -- to unite the Armenian people of the world. He hopes to achieve his goal through the Armenian Music Awards. In its third year, the annual music celebration will bring Armenian performers from around the world together on Nov. 17 at The Alex Theatre. "It's an incredible feeling of fulfillment every year that we get a step closer to what we're trying to achieve," said Bahlawanian, the show's founder and producer. "If we can show the world what Armenians are then, automatically, we've united together." The show will honor artists in 22 categories, including best male and best female vocalist and best original song. The event is put on by Armenians in Music and Film Assn., an organization formed in 1998 to promote Armenian music. The list of performers for this year's awards ceremony is being kept a secret but acts will range from dancers to pop singers. The official state jazz band of Armenia will serve as the house band for the evening. Parik Nazarian, who considers singing a hobby, was surprised to find herself nominated in three categories after putting out her first album, "The Cycle of Life." An editor at the Glendale-based Armenian International Magazine, Nazarian is up for best female vocalist, best traditional album and best album cover honors. "When I saw the nominees, especially for the best female vocalist ... that was very exciting for me," she said. "It was an honor." Bahlawanian said he hopes the ceremony will serve as a showcase for Armenian performers and also bring people together. "Music is a universal language," he said. "It doesn't have to be in Armenian.
