In addition to class time, students take excursions to historical sites in Armenia where they learn their land and how to preserve it. “We explain to students that our country is our home and we should take care of it. Students get anxious when they see the dirty territories of historical places,” says headmistress Lilia Vardgesyan. The goal, the teacher says, is that the next generation “will not repeat the mistake of the previous one, as a result of which our nature has been damaged.” It is a goal shared by about 90 environmentalists and education specialists of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia who gathered in Tbilisi last week for an international conference by the Regional Ecological Center (REC-Caucasus). Participants of “Education for Sustainable Development” believe that destruction of nature will be stopped when people learn to respect it. “During this phase of their development the Caucasus countries have not yet learned how to harmonize social, economic and ecological priorities,” says Karine Danelyan, president of the NGO “For Sustainable Human Development. “That is why we’ve ended up in such a serious situation today.” Environmentalists claimed that positive economic changes registered during recent years in Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan has been achieved at the expense of essential damage to the environment. And this damage begins at least from last century. For example, for some 20 years beginning in the 1930s Armenian industry annually cut 450,000 cubic meters of wood from the republic’s forests. Widespread deforestation was also a result of the economic blockade and an energy crisis of 1992-93. As the result, today Armenia is only 10 percent forests, while according to archeologists it used to be four times more. And, before its recent recovery, Lake Sevan dropped 19 meters, beginning in 1933 when water was diverted for development of industrial, agricultural and energy sectors. Join discussion on this issue at ArmeniaNow's forum Specialists who met in the Georgian capital say the Caucasus is under threat of natural catastrophe due to abuse. “In each country of the Caucasus the environmental situation is very serious, because you are in a place, where there are a lot of conflicts,” European Union independent representative of international advisory council Per Gahrton told Armenianow. “You had war, and forests have been destroyed by industry. There has not been enough money to take care of the environmental aspects’ development. “Young and old people need to be educated, they need to understand that if they don’t stop these effects on the environment now, then they will have a very dangerous situation in the future.” Yerevan State University scientist Alexander Yesayan presented the conference with his method of saving the environment – taking eco-education to cyber space. “Virtual Biology” has recently been created by Armenian scientists for the ninth and tenth forms and has already been instilled into the computers of more than 1,000 schools in Armenia as an experiment. “A negative attitude towards nature is formed just from the school as the content of the text-books is full of phrases difficult to learn, which is not interesting to children,” says Yesayan. “And usually they learn the lesson by heart without understanding.” The author of the program says “Virtual Biology” makes ecology attractive to young students by teaching environmental responsibility through bright illustrations, pictures and entertaining tasks. Yesayan is sure that by studying the virtual eco-system of the planet, children will love and preserve it in reality. He and others are hopeful his virtual colored biology will never become a subject about a nature that has disappeared.

Arpa
The subject topic of this thread reads- Good News… Which do you want first? The good news or the bad. OK. Let’s begin with the good news; POLLUTE TO MEASURE POLLUTION Lragir.am 24 Aug 06 The government of Armenia adopted a highly important document August 24, which maintains the order, standards, methods, etc. of measuring the pollution of land in Armenia. After this decision of the government the Ministry of Health will work out the parameters to find out later which lands are polluted, where, how, with what, etc. In other words, the document adopted by the government August 24 will prevent pollution of land in Armenia, or if it is polluted, we will learn the degree and cause of pollution. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environmental Protection does not know the degree of pollution of land in Armenia, because it does not hold monitoring for the lack of parameters, money and laboratories. The lack of a laboratory is the same as the lack of money. What has changed now that they decided to have a laboratory? Perhaps the economic state, for now they can afford it. It appears, however, that the laboratory is no longer a necessity since the land has been polluted over the past 15 years without measure and limit. Although, on the other hand, it is logical that the government adopts the order for measuring pollution with some delay. For we need to pollute first to measure pollution. ======= Then let us read the bad. From AZG Aug. 23,2006 Poor, poor Sevan.
Arpa
Above when we wrote about the birds and beast of Armenia and I invited us to comment, to see if we can identify them and name their international names, we heard an absolute silence. Of course! How stupid of me! I did not use the definitive keyword…. The only word that extends our antennas…JEW. So, this time I will… LOX and GEFILTE FISH. How is that to have us to get involved? Let me repeat LOX and GEFILTE FISH, KOSHER and HRYAKAN. Is that enough to extend our antennas? Once again, how stupid of me. We are talking about Hayastan and Sevan. Not that kakastan/ Hryastan and Jewvan. Why is it that a mere mention of J E W elicits a million responses and the mention of S E V A N meets with absolute silence? Do we know what the capital of Armenia is? No! It is not the capital of Hryastan? Am I angry? :taz: How do you measure anger? MosJan
MOSSING: SEVAN CHANGES ITS PROFILE In the recent five years more than 1 million bay fish were poured into the Lake Sevan, said Karen Tchenteredjyan of the Ministry of Environmental Affairs. According to him in the years of the active fish industry exploitation 80-84 million baby fish was poured into the lake annually. The number of baby fish is cut. It is planned to pour 16 thousands trout and 50 thousands gegharkuni baby fish. “Now we work on the quality not on the quantity,” he said. According to the results of monitoring the number of crabs and crucian increased which proves the mossing process of the lake. But the state official mentioned that the increase of crabs is not bad as last year 500 tones of crabs were exported from the country. http://www.panorama.am/en/economy/2008/04/03/manradzuk/
Arpa
GOOD NEWS!!!Is it enough? I had written a lengthy article citing all the ecological horror stories I had witnessed , but I decided to abbreviate it as we have seen them at other times under others topics. To reiterate..It is good that Yerevan is cleaning up. Hopefully, some day we won’t see trash being thrown out of windows and cars, left at the sides of streets with dogs and other varmints scavenging. And when it is collected by a one man sanitation worker, driving an open bed pick up truck with only a shovel in hand… How much of that trash flies off on the way to the dump? It is better than not. Yet when one goes a few miles just outside Yerevan, one will be appalled at the ecological condition of the countryside and the outlying towns and villages, where the waterways are choked with trash of all kinds, glass, plastic, dirty diapers, food leftovers, be they of vegetable or animal remains. I can go on, I will stop here, perhaps some others can add and tell us the horrors they have seen.----http://hetq.am/en/ecology/maqur-hayreniq-2/“Clean Homeland” Project Underway; PM Promises Stiffer Fines for Polluters[ 2010/06/05 | 12:49 ] ecology World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated today, June 5. Clean-up of the gorge itself is taking place within the parameters of a project entitled “Three Bridges”, which focuses on trash removal and beautification of the areas in the vicinity of the Hrazdan, Hakhtanak and Davitashen bridges that span the gorge.“We must educate our children and grandchildren that it is wrong to pollute the environment, our dear city. Such an attitude is a prime component of true patriotism and must become a cherished tradition. We must see to it that this initiative spreads to all the regions of the country,” PM Sargsyan told reporters.PM Sargsyan noted that penalties for commercial establishments polluting the environment need to be increased and that citizens of the country must also face fines for littering and other disrespectful behavior.
