World Press Index 2005

Recommended Posts

The new World Press Index was published today by "Reporters sans frontières"

Armenian ranks at # 102 well ahead of Azerbaijan (#141) but surprisingly behind Georgia (#99) and even Turkey (??) (#98) - I wonder of the recent arrest of Hrant Dink was taken into consideration? How bad can the press situation be in Armenia if we're ranking way behind countires in a virtual state of civil war like the Congo?

Also of note both the USA & Canada have dropped in the rankings since last year's (2004) report while Turkey moved up from 113, and Armenian fell back from 83.

You can see the report Here.

I stopped paying attention to any Indexes, Charts, Classifications, World Rankings etc... It is all business!

You realize how false all these rankings are when you meet people from different countries and then realize how those "most developed" blah, blah is baloooooony! :)

There is no way that Congo could be in that position.

Yeah - I was pretty surprised as well. ;)

But more importantly, the US has slipped almost 20 places, while the Turks (even with the Pahmuk & Dink incidents) have risen in the rankings. Perhaps Gams is right?

What Heritage Foundation is to the right establishment in the East coast, Reporters sans frontières is to the leftists in Europe. Both are politically motivated and we can easily see this in the list. Currently unrecognized countries such as North Cyprus and Kosovo are included as is the US administration (?) in Iraq.

Other than that I think the list is fairly accurate.

"Journalists there simply relay government propaganda. Anyone out of step is harshly dealt with. A word too many, a commentary that deviates from the official line or a wrongly-spelled name and the author may be thrown in prison or draw the wrath of those in power. Harassment, psychological pressure, intimidation and round-the-clock surveillance are routine."

Yeah, um, Turkey??? It doesn't make sense.

How about Russia and Mexico, they are that below Turkey?

137 United States of America (in Iraq) 48,50

What does this mean?
