I don' t know about the drive train but I wouldn't be surprised if that thing totally outperformed a lot of these big heavy "4x4" vehicles marketted to the US public.

That's awesome :D

Not sure about those wheels though ... looks like some black powdercoat or some duplicolor (black) would do wonders on those bling blings.

You do know the Niva is a just a civilian version of the 'Villis' (Soviet light military vehicle still in use today), which is in its turn is based on the American 'Willys' of WW2 antiquity?

The Soviets got a bunch of em as part of the Lend-Lease program.

Mos one thing, how much did it cost to do the registration to get a lisence plate to be able to drive here?

no registration - it's an test & display vehicle

we need it for video clip

i have an limited 2000mile EPA/DOT contract for 2 years total cost of $375 not including the Bond - after that i ether need to send the car back to Canada or register the car as an off road ONLY vehicle...

i guess i was wrong -

GAZ is made in Russia and was made way b4 teh jeep Vilis

GAZ, Gorki'y Automobil Zavod - (click on the text for pics, each link is a different pic)

The history of GAZ 4x4 vehicles began with the GAZ 61 (one of the first Russian offroad vehicles), constructed in 1938. In order to use it as a small military 4WD, the GAZ 61 was totally redesigned in a very short period (3 February - 25 March 1941) under the leadership of Vitaliy Grachev and the new model was named GAZ 64.

It looked like American Bantam with it's narrow track. After major modernization (wider track, new fenders, footboards, additional fuel tank under driver's seat), on 23rd September 1943 the GAZ 67 entered production. In all 92,843 GAZ 67 were built up to the autumn of 1953. In almost all hard offroad conditions the GAZ 67 was better than American Willys, Bantam and Ford. But it was less reliable and less economical (0.4 litre/km). There were also problems with the brakes (they were rod operated) and it proved hard to repair.

After WW2 the GAZ 67 started to spread around the world, some even made it to Australia. The GAZ 67 was modified many times and eventually in 1947 the GAZ 69 model appeared. It was created by Grigory Vasserman. The first production GAZ 69 was made on 1st September 1953. At the end of 1954 production of the GAZ 69 was moved to Ulianovsk (UAZ), where it was produced from 1956 to December 1972 when it was replaced by the UAZ-469.

634,285 of the GAZ 69 were built over all versions.

- Dmitry Bernt

Some GAZ69 variants

I was going to list them, but this site does the biz!! here's the link....variants
