I'm old school, boyeee! It's stuff like Beastie Boys, De La Soul, NWA, and Whodini for me.

Public Enemy is my favorite rap group. Saw them a bunch of times in the late 80's/early 90's. The day their second album came out I was brave (stupid?) enough to go to the sev part of LA to meet them and get the album autographed. Needless to say, I stuck out like a sore thumb!

It takes a lot of talent to go against the flow and come up with unique musical style. In international charts it was accomplished by the likes of U2, Beatles, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and etc, in Armenian pop culture it was mostly accomplished by Nune (she was one of the first ones to put pop music touch on folk songs), Grisha Agaghanyan (he was the first one to sing in Armenian using international pop music) and Harut (he was one of the first ones to instrumentalize Armenian music). I think Armenian consumer is to blame for such a mediocrity of current pop Armenian music. They buy the records, and with that encourage creation of the new mediocre quality products. If Armenian consumer was more demanding in choosing quality of Armenian music than musicians will be forced to work harder and dedicate more hours in shaping their music. There is a band named Ardzagank in Yerevan, who was pretty good, yet couldn’t find the appropriate following. To this day they remain marginalized, yet they refuse to give in to popular pressure and to this day pursue their art they way it originally started. In contrast to them, a band called Arevatsag in Los Angeles came up with pretty amazing songs 5-6 years ago, which reminded me of The Wall album by Pink Floyd, yet they abandoned their innovative style due to their inability to attract more followers and now sing in some restaurant in Los Angeles. I think taste in music is very subjective thing to discuss, but I think the current dismal state of contemporary Armenian music can be blamed only on Armenian consumer.
