Rap & Armenians

You know, I don't like rap.I mean GANGSTA rap.It always surprised me why do so many young Armenians (Guys mostly) love it.....?

If it was just music for them, I wouldn't mind...but they are taking it as "aprelyakerp", some kind of a life style that everyone has to stick to....

I would like to know your comments after you read this also:

Nvard, good point...

I love music, all kinds, but I do get the urge to run out of the room whenever I hear rap, present-day rap (I believe the origins of the rap movement weren't as hideous), ESPECIALLY rap in armenian.

Why do I think so many of our young guys love rap so much? Simple, really. At a certain age, when they start formulating their own ideas about masculinity and women and being a "real man", in the absence of appropriate role models they turn to the next best thing. The rap culture tells them what to think on these issues, they don't have to figure it out on their own. It's a ready made standard of "maleness". All they have to do is accept it. Which they do. Poor girls.

It takes a lot of talent to go against the flow and come up with unique musical style. In international charts it was accomplished by the likes of U2, Beatles, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and etc, in Armenian pop culture it was mostly accomplished by Nune (she was one of the first ones to put pop music touch on folk songs), Grisha Agaghanyan (he was the first one to sing in Armenian using international pop music) and Harut (he was one of the first ones to instrumentalize Armenian music). I think Armenian consumer is to blame for such a mediocrity of current pop Armenian music. They buy the records, and with that encourage creation of the new mediocre quality products. If Armenian consumer was more demanding in choosing quality of Armenian music than musicians will be forced to work harder and dedicate more hours in shaping their music. There is a band named Ardzagank in Yerevan, who was pretty good, yet couldn’t find the appropriate following. To this day they remain marginalized, yet they refuse to give in to popular pressure and to this day pursue their art they way it originally started. In contrast to them, a band called Arevatsag in Los Angeles came up with pretty amazing songs 5-6 years ago, which reminded me of The Wall album by Pink Floyd, yet they abandoned their innovative style due to their inability to attract more followers and now sing in some restaurant in Los Angeles. I think taste in music is very subjective thing to discuss, but I think the current dismal state of contemporary Armenian music can be blamed only on Armenian consumer.

This is true for all music.

Why is it so hard to come across more unique bands like you mentioned (Ardzagank & Arevatsag)? How did you hear about them??? Please clue me in. I'm always on the hunt for new sounds especially Armenian. The Floyd reference piques my interest!

Back to the thread...It's no surprise rap is popular with Armenian kids, because it's popular with all kids. Similar to what Gayane was saying, boys love macho, bravado crap.

By the way, nothing says, "I'm getting old" more than, "The music the kids are listening to today is crap." Face it, we've become our parents.

Nvard, that article you posted is good, except whomever wrote it obviously isn't 100% informed. They say, "Since when have Glendale and Burbank become hoods?" Not sure about Burbank, but parts of Glendale are very much "hoods".

For me, it was the punk music and style in early 80's. You had to look punk, or you were a poseur, plain and simple. God forbid, you should have long hair and go see Black Flag.

Seems funny and silly now, but when you're a teenager, this stuff matters. I'll admit a big difference nowadays is kids get shot over this stuff, back then we just risked getting beat up by some jocks.

Mike, if what you're saying is true about Glendale, then I definitely live in the "hood"...lol...this is only partly a joke; I don't think it's quite as bad as that, but it's certainly getting there (I've worked with families in the REAL hood, like East L.A...I always got a kick out of how many therapists won't even set foot there...)

sorry, sorry, i apologize, this had nothing to do with the topic...don't shoot

Could be my mistake, but aren't there parts of Glendale near San Fernando Road and industrial area that have quite a bit of crime problems?

OFF TOPIC: What kind of therapy do you do? My wife is a speech therapist.

Really, Mikey...I do behavioral modification therapy, she'd probably know what it is(applied behavioral analysis). What population does she work with? Mine are autistic kids. Also, school district or private? Me: private

agree with you up to a point artur. they offer something that no other for of music offers. I can't quite expalin it but it does. Ive been listening to it for a while and i see soem good points and alot of bad points. Like i said before though its just bringin the street to ya ears. Its ok up to a certain point (rape, and other unscrupulous acts are in my opinion wrong to put on a cd that young people will listen too) thats the biggest problem about rap to me , when they start talkin bout rape. You got people who are just comin up in the world who will go out and do that stuff.

Nvard, ppl like this are the same Rabiz ppl that were translating Turkish music in Armenian and speaking in Armenian language, and ppl could not really differentiate between these Armenians and Turks; becase these Turkish singers were taking in our language. This is perhaps someone like that; half turk, half arab. But ppl like this come and go in the memories of some small population of ppl like them.

I do not like that fact that these ppl that are singing in rap style, because it is not their created style. This is the style of an african american ppl and it is not acceptable musik. what would be acceptable if they created their own style of estradayin, and took a name of an armenian singer that they created their own musik and style. in estradayin it is hard to do, but in classical, it is classical with violins, trombone, and the rest. however, it is wrong to steal someone else's music style and present it as armenian rap, or carabian music, ect. you know what i mean.......!!??

Nvard I have read that article. (I actually stumbled accross it before coming to Hyeforum as well, and didn't really know what to make of it)

While I read it now I was cringing, could hardly read it till the end, I was so I was embarrassed for them. Reason being? Because not many people are "hye aware" as I like to put it, and the impressions that the odars get of us, I hope it's not that!!! I hope it's that we are leading the lives that we actually are: not from a minority of rabiz that just TRY to act like gangstas and getting it wrong because they think they look hard.

Anyway, were only having a laugh! Only 1 problem, hope the laugh is not on us when people want to stereotype. I think it was well said of that guy.

What's the difference between System Of A Down playing jermag music and KRO doing sev music? Nothing, it's all part of the American mainstream.

Just like Armenian-American kids like basketball and surfing, they're going to like rap as well. What do you expect Hye teenagers to do: listen to Ophelia in their lowered cars??? Yo, we're rollin' in our Hon-das, cranking-up da Gomi-das

I'm just hoping that by the time my son is older, the kids will be into something better than lame-ass, third-rate rap. 'Course I was into KISS in junior high, then punk and new wave in high school, so was that any better???

Pilafhead, I think you KNOW what I am trying to get a here.

For example, I have lots of stuff blaring out of my window but I will NOT be seen dead with THAT if my life depended on it. If you do, shoot me on the spot, and end my suffering

Kazzita,

I wasn't directly responding to what you said, just the thread in general.

I understand your point. It's the problem with a lot of minorities--the most visible ones are the last ones you want representin' the peoples.
