A tandoor is a cylindrical clay oven used in India and other parts of southeast Asia in which food is cooked over charcoal. The word tandoor comes from the Hindi words tandūr and tannūr; these derive from the Persian tanūr, which comes from the Arabic word tannūr. It is needed to cook certain types of East Indian food, such as tandoori chicken and bread varities like tandoori roti and naan. (The word tandoori is the adjective form.). The modern day tandoor oven uses eletricity or gas to heat the oven

TANDOOR DESCRIPTION

 

Tandoor is an oven made from Indian clay, a simple artifact which does many things like bake bread or roast lamb and chicken.

 

All preparations cooked in the Tandoor are marinated in yogurt together with a special blend of herbs and spices to suit each variety of preparation. The Tandoor is kept at a high temperature with charcoal which heats the walls. The heat which is radiated together with smouldering charcoal does the cooking. This process seals in the goodness and the smouldering charcoal also lends the food a special flavour.
