Others also hiding, let the family in, after Geghuhi’s father made his awful promise to silence his daughter if necessary.

After an hour the baby got hungry and began to cry. The father kept his word, and began to strangle her.

“My mother grabbed me and ran to the street,” Geghuhi says. At this point the child had fainted. “She had to jump over some fences, but I was too heavy. So she would throw me over the fence and then jump. Because of the pain from hitting the ground, I recovered.”

Geghuhi’ mother, Aghavni, fled with her daughter to the town of Bigha.

“We haven’t heard from my father since then,” Geghuhi says.

Geghuhi and her mother stayed in Bigha until 1922

(Mind you, Siamanto wrote the said poem in 1909.)

It tells about people hiding in a basement, while;

 

From above, through the holes of the wooden floor a flood of warm blood seeped through onto our faces. Suddenly a scream of a newborn infant breaks the silence. Oh! That innocent traitor! There was only one solution! The young mother whispers in between sobs: “God help us! My breasts are empty. I have not a drop of milk. I suckled down to my very blood. Your decision. Do as you must“. “Must be strangled” one voice whispered. All forty of us whispered- must be strangled. “You must strangle me first “ sobbed the mother, offering her neck along with the infant’s …. In the darkness, two arms as if coiling snakes find the infant’s neck and presses with force…Silence!!!
