Guest Posted January 7, 2001 Report Share Posted January 7, 2001 Hi, I have been playing the duduk for about 4 years now. My teacher was Ararat Petrossian. I am interested in making my own instruments. I have made a few shvis that play quit well. However, I have had a lot of trouble making reeds for my duduk. I have attempted about 100 times to make reeds but have never successfully make one that plays well. The problem is that they crack easily. I shave the reed down and put it in boiling water with a clamp on it in order to flatten it. It is difficult to flatten the reed without really thinning it out. However, when it’s too thin, it looses its timber and sounds really buzzy. Ararat is a great musician but unfortunately he doesn’t know how to make the reeds. Guest Posted January 8, 2001 Report Share Posted January 8, 2001 Wow Ararat Petrosyans Student I only know one more person who Ararat has teached, his one of the best non-Armenian duduk Players that I know. now his Armenian name is Sheram My best regards for Ararat he is one of The Best duduks Players, my friend consider yourself a Fortuned to be Ararats Students!!! The reeds Leo jan , This is one of those thinks that is been held secret for long time, and not many duduk Players or even duduk Makers can make reeds. The only person that I know who makes duduk and the reeds is MKS ( Maestro Karlen )and belive me his duduks and his reeds are THE BEST . and his not going to teach me or you haw to this is his sicret ,he has spend most of his life on this. I gave up making reeds or even trying to make one long time a go I needed to make a reed for my Bass duduk , wich i have coppied, no one was able to help me expect MKS , he not only made the reed for me but also tuned and corrected the instrument that i have made nice a I have seen him making reeds 2 or 3 times , I can tell you this No boiling water, No Clamping ,making a reed is complicated process , in average it takes 15 days for one reed to be made. i don't know the ditels of it , even if i did it whot be fare from me to discus it and open his secrets .
