Armenians are often big fans of flamenco and flamenco pop, as witnessed by any Gipsy Kings concert(about 50% of the audience will be Armenian, not much of an exaggeration). We also have our claim to fame in flamenco, Armik who is recognized world wide. Here are some other groups you may like: Gipsyland-cousins of the Gipsy Kings, with more of a Latin American rumba influence. Tekameli-from France, more spiritual oriented with songs to the Virgin Mary,and evangelicos which are sung in Gipsy processions. Excellent! El Lebrijano-does flamenco with a Morroccan orchestra, a more authentic, less poppy version of what Alabina does. Ketama-flamenco with a jazz twist Radio Tarifa-also explore the Arabic sound with flamenco, though mostly sung in Spanish Ciganos d'oro-different, Portuguese Gipsy flamenco! Finally, if you don't already own an Alabina cd, what are you waiting for? I know they are criticized for being too popish, and that she is a Jew posing as an Arab, but the music is addictive. I'm a big fan of flamenco (I love both listening to it and dancing to it) and I'm always looking for good flamenco: your list should do it It's so amusing to find men so mesmerized by flamenco dancers..very cute. Although I've always wondered: what exactly is it about this dance that gives us the power to captivate men so easily? Guest Posted August 15, 2000 Report Share Posted August 15, 2000 Gayane, I think Flamenco's appeal cuts across gender lines, women can be just as mesmerized, and remember men dance flamenco too! There is something that cuts to the core of one's being when listening to the pain expressed in authentic flamenco.
