Guest
Greeks are not Latino, and their language doesn't look like spanish, Italian, Romanian or French.Greek is an Indo-European language but it is of the another type of Indo-European called Kentum (centum= lat. 100)group. Armenian Like Iranian languages, Slavic languages, baltic languages, North Indian and Sanskrit are of Satem (shatem =100 Avestan) group. The classic Armenian and Pahlevi (a middle Iranian language) were for 70% the same, but the contemporary linguistics not all agree on the fact that wether Armenian is an Iranian language or not. There are Greek words in armenian, most of them because the Armenian bible was translated from Greek original.
Guest
Hey Kazza! Greeks are not Latin, however Latin-based languages have numerous Greek words. All the words in Spanish that end in "ma" (programa, drama, dilema etc.) come from Greek via Latin, this is why they are given the masculine "el" rather than "la" as would be assumed. There is also a big cultural connection between Spain and Greece since antiquity. El Greco was, of course, from Greece as is today's Queen Sofia. The Catalans dance the Sardana, a dance which looks suspiciously Greek (and Armenian too, but Im sure the origin is Greek). As for relations between Armenians and Greeks, I think they have been generally good. Raffi A who lives in Greece can vouch for that. However, I sometimes sense a bit of a patronizing "big brother"attitude of Greeks toward Armenians, I may be wrong, but that has been my perception. Also I believe our word for "Sunday" (giraki) comes from the Greek Kyriaki (Lord's day).
Guest
Oh one more thing, La corrida de toros or bullfighting ultimately is said to come from Ancient Greece, especially Crete. This is, according to Carlos Fuentes, a prominent Latin American author.

Guest
Ppl, I need to know - what are things like between the greeks and Hyes? This is some thing I need to know and has been bugging me for ages. Does anyone know what greeks think of Hyes and Hyes of greeks? Thank you, Kazz P.S: Is "greek" also classed as Latino? (Like the Spanish and Italians are)
Guest
The relationship between Armenians and Greeks, as it relates to contemporary history is of mostly friendship with a few ups and downs. Armenia has a military pact with Greece, cadets are being trained in Greece. ArmenTel, the country´s telecom monopoly has OTE, the Greek phone company as the operator and a major shareholder. However as far as I know Greece has not played any role in the Genocide recognition issue. And despite its long standing animosity towards Turkey, the bilateral relationship has been warming up a bit.
Guest
dear Kazza, Yes Armenian is definely a Satem language, but take over words from other languages is allways possible.Bull fighting is originally from Crete (or maybe they barrowed it from Egypt) but the craetans originally didn't spoke an Indo-European Language, the contemporary Kentum language of Greece came later. What is interesting is that even the language of ancient Anatolia, the Hettitian was a Kentum language and not Satem as people may believe. These all make the propaganda that claims that Armenian is not native to contemporary Armenia makes baseless. Some propagandists say that the Armenians came from West Anatolia to the East, in That case Armenian should have been a kentum language, but it's not. Armenian was sorrounded by the non-indoEuropean caucasian languages, semetiv languages, Hettitian Kentum Indo-European, and various Satem indo-European Iranian languages. Any suggestion that the Armenians moved from West, or north or south West to their contemporary habitat, is not logicall, because otherwise Armenin should have been a non-indo European or at least a Kentum laguage, but it's not. Can you understand Dutch? because I have a good book about the Indo-European languages (however I don't agree in all points)

One thing I would like to know; my surname is Kouioumzian. What is yours? What part of Armenia is that from? And what is all this eastern and western business all about? I will speak to you in a little while, OK?
Guest
Yes, Kyriaki is "the Lord's day". Kyriakos is a popular boys name, because of this, and also, "Kyria" is used as a way of adressing and greeting elders, or people in proffessions ,as a mark of respect. For example, "Kryia" Bambos or "Kyria" Nina. the Cypriots however put more emphasis on the K's as a G, and T's as D's, etc, sounding heavier and more rough than greeks. A bit like their version of being the "****neys" of the greek language. (****neys are east londoners.) Think Dick Van Dyke's dodgy accent, except he wasnt even doing it properly! That's why greek cypriots come to London they drop their T's and D's and G's in english and speak ****ney-like ish (Like "avin' a nice day? instead of Are you having a nice day) I would love to know more about armenian dialects but I stumbled accross the Lang section and that wold answer a lot of my Q's. I would love to learn more about Armenia and Armenians full stop! I welcome ALL new suggestions and comments, etc. A note to all: I thought, seeing as it's showing more and more obvious with my clumsy postings that I make anyway, that I thirst for knowlege on all things Hye. But to be blatantly honest nothing Hye has ever played a part in my upbringing although my father is Hye and my mother is greek. even my hye Auntie and Uncle never mentioned or spoke about their roots. I am a "half breed" If you like to put it in those terms. It was never mentioned. When I told relatives and odars "I am armenian" I never knew what to make of those puzzled and blank looks they gave me. every thing I know now is through my own research and self learning. I am a Hye and would never consider myself or call myself an odar beause why? Simply, I am not one in mind and heart. Also, because I have made the descision MYSELF not to be one, by learning all I can and not being ashamed to call myself hye, anywhere. ALso remeber, in England and London there are NOT that many of us around, hence the general ignorance. I have loved chatting to you all

Our culture and tradition (both in ME Diaspora and Armenia) doesn't allow usage of nasty words, and insulting (especially in presence of females). This is no sign of Hetamnatsutyun. Just look at most developed nation in the world-Japanese people. They are very strong and strict in terms of tradition. We (me and you) oppose Garo. But the difference is that you condemn Garo for being Dictator, but I oppose Garo for being TOO LIBERAL.Please always remember we are in HYE-FORUM. We have lots of things to discuss here (from culture/language, live/sex to politics). And please never call Garo “silly Gulag” again. Guest
Thanx. I said I was feeling a bit overwhelmed last time, and it might have sounded strange, but - I was browsing, and reading all the things we had to encounter through the ages - and we came through the other side every time! I also read some thing here, about the armenian wife and her husband here who campaigned for the rights and - it just gives me inspiration after inspiration about OUR PEOPLE, that we will become stronger and stronger, PROVIDED be stop all the petty squabbles over nothings. It feels so good to come on this forum to talk about things, (although yes, the forum needs it's improvements) it made me feel a bit emotional about it, and seeing the replies made me feel even more so. Anyway, everything said made sense. I didnt know abou tthe bit about the languages, I must say I see the sinmilarity in the Shatem group languages to make up that grouop. Having said that some of the tradional greek music sounds so similar to Indian and slavidc music its unbeleivable. But no, the greek language isnt so similar to Shatem to belong to it. Some armenian alphabet letters are very like greek alphabet numbers (look at the home page of www.armeniandiaspora.com if you dont beleive me!) I also hear you about the links between latin and greek language, element borrowed from each other. And also some cultural things, like dances too. Ancient greece and Rome were seperate from each other (hence greeks not being latin: it seems to obious now come to think of it!) But they were still so close that these things will happen! But since it was so long ago, that what people think belongs to this group and that group will be lost in the mists of time to them and open to debates. It is so hard to get solid facts about these things, Example from another subject : armenian poulations. But we can only try to be as accurate as we can be. Dont give on trying ! Hmmm, the big brother attitude. Reason being in greek culture is that everyone looks after each other. In the culture, the older not taking care of the younger, or families not looking after their elderly, society not looking after their disabled and vulnerable, etc, is absolutley UNHEARD of (not like in england and other western societies, where you just "stick "em all in homes". I suppose greeks indentify with the armenians since the persecution of the turks, remember we went through the same thing, albeit to a lesser degree. So then it most probably makes then want to unite against them. And I suppose the "babying" and "protective" aspect of this, is what probably got on Raffi A's nerves! I must admit, remeber the time when ppl were being rude to you farsisteve? I immediatley wanted to jump in! And I took a little trip to Irans whatever thingy, just out of the curiosity of it. And when I saw some of the comments to you , i swear i couldnt have strangled them (like Homer does to Bart, get the picture?) I felt like saying, "this IS some one on hye forum and any one who messes with Farsi or anyone else on Hye forum messes with me " bt obviously they arent worth the time of day. As for bullfighting originating from Crete: I hope not! I hate blood sports! I always suspected general relations between greeks and armenians were good. Mabye the reason they are not invloved in the genocide cause is because they are too scared of the Turks (it is bigger than both of us put together) but then , what countires ARE involved in the cause? Guest
'course not Garo! I was only joking! Arat Sorry to cause offence but you could see that I was joking, Garo knows I dont think anyone is a gulag, also becuase I was using smiley symbols as well. Just because I disagree with him sometimes I dont oppose him. Garo knows I think some of the things he does are really good (running this forum for one, otherwise we wouldnt have a forum to go to!) Garo if you didnt happen to take it as a joke I am really sorry. Well I'm sorry that you think that I am "nasty" or say "nasty" things on the forum. I am sorry that's the way you feel. I see your point fair enough some people wont like it. They must think i am insulting, insolent rude, whatever. In fact why dont we just close down this topic and never bring it up again? I'm sorry! Guest
B.T.W Kazza it is satem in Avestan. Actualy strange to me because it is Satám with accentuation to the latest A in sanskrit, Usually if there is a S in Sanskrit there is a sh in Avestan, however I realize that 100 in Persian is 'Säd'in Russian is it sto, so the s in Satem languages is a fact. Guest
Thank you Iranyar, for your reply. Thank you for your politeness and manners. Also I heard a rumour that Scandinavian people knew Sanskrit first then taught it in North india: - is this true? By the way? I don't know Dutch i'm sorry.
Guest
Dear Kazza Sanskrit doesn't come from Scandinavia. the Scandinavians speak north Germanic languages, yhus Kentum languages, while Sanskrit is a satem language. The Indians believe that Sanskrit was introduces by the Aryan people to north India. And Aryans are we, not the Europeans But a fact is that lithuanian looks very similar to Sanskrit. Because lithuanian is a satem language which has kept the archaic features.
Guest
Well, The Greek Parliament has recognised the Armenian Genocide 4-5 years ago. The Greeks had some trouble with the Turks over the issue , but then who cares ( to say the least) about the Turks. We are very proud of this... The Greek governments are friendly with the Armenians, however the Greek people are still ignorant of Armenian issues. I still get the question " Are the Armenians Christians or Moslems? " and " Armenian language sounds like Turkish , or Russian ".I suppose it is not the mistake of the people , but the general educational level. Unfortunately the Greeks are so much in love with their, unquestionable, history and cultural advancements , that they pay very little attention to other cultures and history. Of course the elite class knows and admires us.Once , I wished to receive the Holy Communion from a Greek priest, but he refused because he was not sure , wheather we are Orthodox ... I was shocked , because for me Greeks and Armenians were brothers. Then of course I remembered our History, the endless battles , wars , conflicts between Armenia and the patronizing Greek Byzantine empire. Armenians are monophysites Orthodox, while the Greeks believe in the dual physis of Jesus. This has been a great separating issue, between the two Churches. There are many facts , which can not be analysised in depth in here. I love Greece and Greeks , so I consider it my duty to 'educate' and talk to them about us , because after all , we are both Christians, have many cultural similarities and we share the same enemy. Kazza , I presume that your original surname comes from Kouyioumjian, which originates from the turkish word Kouyioumji .Kouyioumji is a profession, I don't know the english equivalent.Actually there are many Kiouyoumjians in Cyprus , I knew them because I was studying in Cyprus for 6 years. Maybe you are related to them , but then maybe not , because it is a very common Armenian surname.
Guest
Raffiaharonian, Thanks for the reply. You are right abou the general ignorance. When i told some friends I'm armenian they said "oh! I didnt know you were russian!"
Guest
Greece-Armenia-Iran signed a military pact, all agreeing to attack Turkey if one of our countries is attacked. Greeks are some of the leading foreign investors in Armenia. Greeks are our brothers in Orthodoxy and Turkic sufferings, as are the Serbs. Greeks are not Latin, their language is generally classified as Hellenic (Greek) and the Romantic languages have their own classification. Latin (I think) came from Ancient Greek, however. And of course, French, Italian, Spanish, etc came from Latin. Hellas-Hayastan, united against the Turks.
