kumkap
The Armenia U-19 team defeated Hungary by a score of 5-1 today to finish top of their qualifying group for the finals, ahead of Belgium, Italy, and Hungary. They had already moved on from the first qualifying round, a feat which neither Turkey, Azerbaijan, or Georgia were able to do. Now they have moved on from the second qualifying round. I will be smiling uncontrollably for the rest of the week.

kumkap
Sport Digest: U-19s earn “victory for whole nation” By Suren Musayelyan ArmeniaNow Reporter Football Unprecedented result: Armenia’s U-19 national team scored an unprecedented success in the 2005 European Cup second qualifying stage (Elite Round) for the first time qualifying for the finals. In their first match on May 27 Armenia drew against formidable Italy 0-0. Thumbs-up! Armenian football team received heroes welcome at home On May 29, Armenia beat Belgium 1-0. And on May 31, Armenia beat the host nation Hungary 5-1. Thus, Armenia’s U-19 team qualified for the eight-nation finals that will be held in Northern Ireland from July 18 to July 29. Italy U-19 head coach Paolo Beretini said the following after his team’s match against Armenia: “We had been convinced before the match that we would beat Armenia, but Armenia showed a very intelligent and tactically mature football. The team’s defense played very well, which denied our footballers to create even a single goal-scoring opportunity. I liked Armenia’s team play very much.” And Belgium’s head coach Marc Van Geersom added: “It was very difficult to play against Armenia, because you had a very strong defense that showed a brilliant game. Your team also has two very strong strikers who joined attack very quickly and immediately created goal-scoring chances. Armenia managed to prevent us from showing our best game. They played tactically a very good match and showed excellent team play. Their interaction on the pitch was so that the impression was that they had always played together. Your team’s goalkeeper impressed me and it would perhaps have been very difficult for you to gain a victory without him.” Armenia U-19 head coach Samvel Petrosyan called the team’s success “the victory of the whole nation” and voiced a hope that in the finals the team will place among the top three or five. Full national team/World Cup 2006 qualifiers: Armenia will host Macedonia in a World Cup 2006 qualifier on June 4. The match will take place in the Vazgen Sargsyan “Republican” stadium. Kick-off at 8.00 p.m. The Armenian and Macedonian U-21s will play earlier the same day in “Hrazdan” stadium. The match will start at 3:00 p.m. And on June 8, at 8:30pm (Romanian time) Armenia will be hosted by Romania in Constantia’s Georgi Haji stadium.
