Guest
Over this Christmas I have discovered that my distant cousin ( I think he comes as a 4th cousin), who however shares my last name, is an Abstract Expressionist. He goes under a nickname Ash-Ron, from Ashot Ronald J. He lives in Orlando, FL. Reproductions of three paintings of his are published in the December-January issue of the Arts Magazine - an Official Publication of United Arts of Central Florida. The paintings are "Alien hookers," "Portrait of the Artist," and "The Return of Arshil Gorky." I have never met him. I was talking to his father a month ago, who told me about his son "Ashot thinks he is an artist." "Here is how the artist describes himself:Ashot Ronald J. (a.k.a. Ash-Ron) was born in Springfield Massachusetts in May 1949, nine months after Arshil Gorky (whom he strongly identifies with) sadly passed away. Voted best artist by the grade school peers for his meticulous drawings of historical personages, Ash-Ron spontaneously took to abstract expressionism while struggling to function at the UMass-Amherst circa 1968. Eventually, he found himself amid towering banyon, mango and avocado trees in a Coconut Grove tent colony along with other street sadhus interested in art, music and mystical philosophies. Found boards and other objects colored with oil pastels became organic abstract landscapes. Discovering mantra meditation and bhakti yoga as a means of consciousness expansion sans drags or alcohol, Ash-Ron began an artistically dormant transcendental period in 1974, living as a mendicant monk in various ashrams in the U.S. and India. Not until the late '90s, did Ash-Ron seriously consider art as a career option.... "Because I intuitively feel that I might be Arshil Gorky reincarnated, I've carefully considered his work and underlying philosophy, and have tried to reconcile them with my own... Philosophy I think Gorky's ideas are valid in a mundane sense but that from a transcendental perspective, purification of consciousness is key. In my case, I think that it is natural that a lot of subconscious images - many from past lives will be stirred-up by techniques such us automatism and frottage (ala Max Ernst), and that they can be abstractly expressed in a sort of therapeutic-aesthetic blend. When my consciousness becomes sufficiently purified, I'll employ photorealistic approach in presenting pure forms from the infinitely variegated and colorful spiritual world." "Honors & Recognition Individual Artist's Recognition Award, United Arts of Central Florida (1999) Best of Show, Arts Market, Church StreetStation, (2000) Arts Magazine, December 2000-January 2001" Now, if anybody can translate all this into simple English, I would appreciate.
