INTERNATIONAL DUDUK FESTIVAL TO TAKE PLASE IN GYUMRI

The state committee for the 1700th anniversary of Christianity in Armenia and world-famous duduk player Jivan Gasparian have come up with an initiative to organize an international duduk festival in Armenia. Famous musicians Michael Brook, Paul Aguillera, Luiggi Sink, Patrice Meyer and others will arrive in Yerevan to take part in the festival.

The festival will start on August 5, in Gyumri, which has still not fully recovered from the damage inflicted by the 1988 devastating earthquake. It is expected that the festival will be a unique event in Armenia’s cultural live, and that it will become traditional. Three stages, including two mobile ones, will be built in Gyumri’s main square. The concert will last about 5 hours, and will include dances, performances and video clips by Levon Madoyan, Vache Hovsepian, and Mkrtich Malkhasian. The organizers claim that they have done everything to make sure the festival turns into a real international event. According to them, the Gyumri festival is also an action which would symbolize Gyumri’s recovery from the earthquake damage and would show the world that Armenia is the motherland of duduk. This is important now, as duduk melody is becoming increasingly popular in the world and can be heard in many movies and jazz and pop performances. For instance, Jivan Gasparian’s melodies can be heard in an Oscar-winning film, the Gladiator.

On August 6, participants of the festival will perform at Yerevan’s Sports and Concert Center.

Patrice Meyer

Guitar

Born : December 18th, 1957 - Strasbourg (France)

Past Bands : Patrice Meyer Groups, Anaïd (1983-85), Hugh Hopper Band (1989-), Pip Pyle's Equip'Out (1995), Richard Sinclair's RSVP (1994-96), Emmanuel Bex/Tertio (1995-96)

Current Band : Patrice Meyer Trio, Hugh Hopper Quartet, John Greaves Trio, Didier Malherbe Trio

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Short Bio:

Patrice Meyer started his career as early as 1973, playing in jazz-rock bands in the Alsace region, and later joining Jacques Thollot's band. In the early 80's, he formed a guitar duo with Philippe Petit, and started playing sessions and gigs with variety singers. In 1983, he released his first solo album, "Racines Croisées", which contained solo guitar pieces, as well as duets with keyboard player Patrick Morgenthaler, and trio pieces with Henri Texier (bass) and Jacques Mahieux (drums).

In 1984, he joined Anaïd, and met such musicians as Sophia Domancich and Hugh Hopper. This led to the formation of the Patrice Meyer Trio/Quartet, with the rhythm section of Hugh Hopper and Pip Pyle, and occasionally Patrick Morgenthaler on keyboards, a line-up which toured extensively in 1985-86 and was featured on one side of Meyer's second solo album, "Dromadaire Viennois" (1987). A real gem, it sadly has yet to be reissued on CD. The second side was equally tasteful but was made with a totally different team of musicians, including Didier Malherbe as well as a few famous French jazz musicians (Henri Texier, Jean-Paul Céléa...).

In 1989, Meyer joined Hugh Hopper's Franglo-Dutch Band, of which he has been a mainstay ever since alongside saxophone player Frank van der Kooij. He is featured on the live set "Mecano Pelorus" (1992) and the mostly studio albums "Hooligan Romantics" (1993) and "Carousel" (1995), occasionally contributing his own compositions to the band's repertoire. Now an honorary member of the Canterbury 'family', he also toured with Richard Sinclair's RSVP band in June 1994 (with Didier Malherbe and Pip Pyle) and with Pip Pyle's Equip'Out circa 1995 (with Elton Dean and Paul Rogers). Another collaboration with Pip Pyle during that period was organist Emmanuel Bex's trio Tertio.

More recently, Meyer has collaborated with the Parisian ensemble Polysons on reworkings of Beatles songs. He also guested at Polysons' performances of Soft Machine classics featuring Hugh Hopper, in St.Germain-en-Laye and Annecy in December 1998 and March 1999 respectively. Meyer and Hopper are due to play in a new quartet alongside Polysons member Pierre-Olivier Govin (sax) next autumn. In July 1999 there was also a one-off gig at Jacky Barbier's club in Bresse-sur-Grosne with the most unusual line-up of Meyer, Hugh Hopper, Pip Pyle and John Greaves ! This led to his current involvement in Greaves' new trio, for live gigs beginning in September 2000. He has also played in Didier Malherbe's trio alongside percussionist Philippe Foch, during a break in Hadouk Trio's activities.

Among Meyer's current activities are also a quartet featuring clarinet player Sylvain Kassap, and an acoustic trio with Jean-Luc Ponthieux and Pierre-Olivier Govin. He also has plans, at last, for a third solo album, to be recorded in a trio format (guitar-bass-drums), possibly with a sax player guesting. He insists that it will have to be a totally live recording, with no overdubs, in reaction to what he perceives as an increasingly computerised musical environment.

I was thinking that it would be much better. Well maybe next time. People of Yerevan will make sure Jivan knows that they did not like it and maybe he will learn from it. Too bad.

Movses jan, to tell you the truth I do not know who Ara Gevorgyan is? Is he a master duduk player as well?
