Arpa
Moved from under the subject topic of "genocide" as I hate that subject topic. ========= DEJA VU!! History repeats itself. Those who cannot learn from history will repeat the mistakes time and again. We have spoken about this subject, if in a tangential way at many occasinons. Turn of the century (19-20th) Armenian literature is full of horror stories about the migrant worker, PANDUKHT. I wish I had the short stories of Ruben Sevak where, he as a physician and a talented writer graphically describes the miseries of the migrant worker. Some of his stories are fit enough to be used as medical textbooks where he describes in detail the symptoms and the excruciatingly painful death from Tetanus, and in another he describes the breath of a TB suffferer as the semll of a freshly slaughtered chicken. Read Grigor Zohrab's novellas and Daniel Varuzhan, in particular "Hivand E" (see below), and even Baronian's parodies where in his inimicable style he describes the humiliations and tribulations of the displaced peasant migrant in the "jungles" of Istanbul. Hivand E; http://hyeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=5209&b=1&st=&p=& Tefarik; This may be a typical story of the humiliation of the proud Armenian peasant, but read his "Postal" to see how history repeats, how honest work and "prostitution" become entangled in a decadent and cynical envoronment. http://hyeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=5301 I am sure we have spoken about the subject at many more occasions, the above links may lead us to those threads There has been many attempts to correctly translate "pandukht" to English but none seem to do justice as the word has so many nuances that cannto be fully expresed. In a chapter "Pandkhti Erger" there is mention of Komitas' "Kanche Krunk" and that best known of them all, almost a national anthem... "Krunk". Any one have access to the lyrics of those songs? Krunk, Karot, Crane, Longing,, NostalgiaYerazanq, Dreaming. Of all the words above "nostalgia" may describe our "pain/wound" (Verq Hayastani) best at the word is based on "algia/pain" of a lost era.On soursce translates the word as " hayreniqi karot".
