Azat Posted February 12, 2003 Report Share Posted February 12, 2003 YEREVAN JAN FILM In 1998 on the screens of Yerevan appeared the lyrical comedy "Yerevan Blues", the scriptwriter and the main actor of which was Michael Poghosian. Judging by the press comments we are firmly concerned that the film was a success. The film was also successful by the number of sold tapes according to organizations who have commercial interest in video films. As to us, the success was due not only to the quality of dynamic episodes, abundance of music and dances and other attributes typical to the genre. In our opinion, the hero, strange, naïve Hapetic managed to touch the strings of the hearts of the audience. Hapetic is not a newly invented personage. He has many pre-types, as most of the nations have spontaneously created a hero of this kind. Traditionally people have had great sympathy to this symbol-hero, as everyone sees a part of himself in him. Absolute notions such as Kindness and Love, the bearer of which is Hapetic, have to be constantly in the center of the audience's attention, in order to be able to influence the process of forming of the hero of our times. We find it desirable to continue the hero's screen life, who is truly loved by the audience. Hapetic, who is at first sight weak and unpopular because of his social status, came to be very popular on the screen. Hapetic's story of life will be demonstrated with the help of episode-fables. Fables have the following advantage: they are trying to find answers to the easiest and yet the most difficult questions - who are you Human Beings? Where are you from and where are you going? Hapetic lives in his own world of fixed moral criteria, where black will never turn to white and vise versa, where the Good is Good and the Evil is Evil. Maybe it is not that way in reality, but it is his world. By no means our hero will be reassured in this. More than that, in defending his ideas Hapetic becomes unrecognizably brave. Hapetic will find himself in fascinating situations, which will not have the apparent ending, but will end the way the audience would fantasize. Hapetic has a dream - to gather around people like himself and to build a City of the Sun. The people of this city would live according to the laws of Kindness and Justice. The fame of this city will reach other countries and then, Hapetic believes, those, who are trying to find the City of the Sun somewhere else, will return to their Motherland. Hapetic is both sad and joyful, has a great sense of humor. He meets interesting people and gets involved in funny stories. The film will have good music, endless humor and happy end. The best professionals of film industry, popular actors and real personages of our city are involved in the creation of the film. Azat Posted February 12, 2003 Author Report Share Posted February 12, 2003 I am somewhat excited that maybe just maybe an Armenian can walk to Chaterian video or any of the endless video store and buy/rent a good Armenian movie instead of those horrible/stupid Armenian videos of jokes and stupidity. 2003 has so far been a good year for the Armenian Film Arts. First the Symphony of Silence, followed by the Journey and now Yerevan Jan.(And there was Ararat last year) I am not claiming that these are revolutionary movies(although I liked the Journey alot), but they are still much better than what is out there not with the exception of many of the old ArmenFilm productions and they are a good reentry into the art of film making.
