Brain Vs Heart?

Recommended Posts

I don’t know much about science or anything but this has been on my mind all day. If our brain is what controls everything all the feelings emotions and so on then how come when we are in love or heartbroken we relate it to our heart?

Or people say follow your heart but what does it mean? Does it have to do with the soul? Is there even a soul?

When someone is kind we say he or she is kind hearted...where did this connection with the heart come from and why?

When we're heartbroken and sad why does it feel hard in the chest and not in the head?

And why do we cry when we're sad? Do my questions even make any sense?? :o

Could anyone answer this because I couldn't find anything online or maybe I didn't search well.

I believe the connection to heart is metaphorical since the heart is the life and death organ ,attributing deep personal feelings and grief is compared to most important organ, in addition I suspect it may well be connected to ancient thinking which got carried away in languages legends and folk tales that heart is the true brain.

Perhaps because the heart is the most physically vocal organ of the body - maybe only second to other parts where sexual excitement is concerned. ;) Still, when you're sad, your heart feels pursed up. When you're happy, it comes on strongly. When you're scared out of your wits, you have a heart attack. Overall I think that the ancients gave the heart too much credit.

CheekY,

First of all, it is not the case that all "models" - i.e. attempts to explain and view as logical our observations/perceptions - relate emotions and feelings with the heart. In fact, some considered the heart as the "seat of intelligence.)"

" In Empedocles...Sense organs also have pores, but these function not to connect the sense organ to the seat of intelligence (which for Empedocles is the heart)...

Alcmaeon's influence was significant in three final ways: 1) His identification of the brain as the seat of human intelligence influenced Philolaus (B13), the Hippocratic Treatise, On the Sacred Disease, and Plato (Timaeus 44d), although a number of thinkers including Empedocles and Aristotle continued to regard the heart as the seat of perception and intelligence. 2) His empiricist epistemology may lie behind important passages in Plato (Phaedo 96b) and Aristotle (Posterior Analytics 100a). 3) He developed the first argument for the immortality of the soul, which influenced Plato's similar argument in the Phaedrus (245c ff.)."

"Heart was extensively studied with arteries however it is not clear if they fully understood the circulation of blood. In fact heart was considered to be the organ of reason instead of the brain though this later organ was extensively studied as well. Anatomy was well understood and dissection was a common procedure."

The following is a more coherent summary/introduction:

Hearts & Minds

If I have time, I'll try to find a little more comprehensive articles.

For now, all you need to know is that the Nervous System/Spirit are the "bad guys" and the Heart/Soul are the "good guys!" :)

The brain only exist to cool the blood. Everything happen in the heart. :)

The Brain is always politicaly correct. However one should never mix politics with sex. I would never kick out of my bed attractive girl only because she is Protestant or Turk. :)

What if you don't know that she is a Turk or Protestant? :P

well generally, I conversate with potential mates, talk to them and see if we click. interests, hobbies, work, things like that. I don't really date girls at bars. a little over 7 months ago, at Magic Mountain, my friend and I met & started conversating with 2 pretty girls with an accent, they looked european from like sweeden or something like that, so I asked where they were from and she said that they were turkish. no wonder i couldn't understand that piglatin they were babbling. After that ride finished we both went our ways.

[CheekY, I apologize for the following off-topic posts!]

I would never kick out of my bed attractive girl only because she is...Turk. :)

If I can't "kick out of my bed an attractive girl because she is *urk," then what other reason or motivation would I have to consider going out with her? :)

But, despite how fulfilling that may be i.e. to kick a *urk out, I would never diminish myself by allowing a person that I despise to touch me.

There exists 3 billion women on Planet Earth and I can do fine without the 35+ millions of *urks who hardly look and/or behave as Women!

Note: I have chosen to auto censor the word "*urk" because it is commonly perceived as unpleasant and offending, evokes unpleasant emotions and imagery and is pregnant with immoral and evil connotations!

Siamanto,

u'r absolutely right. My comment needs to be followed by an apology. I make it a point not to give those ppl respect and i don't know how that happened. I guess I saw the blonde hair/light skin and that kind of fooled me. I guess it would not had the same effect if i said cochroaches instead of european b/c that's really how i felt after they exposed their true identities.

thanks for knocking some common sense/wisdom into our replies.

Realization

Sweden denies Visas and residence permits to all kinds of insects.....

...no matter how much chocolate spread you spill on the table and no matter how many days you don't clean it... no ant ever gets close to it.

There are no cockroaches anywhere."

That undoubtedly proves that they couldn't be Swedish! :)

Edward,

I agree that we have profaned CheekY's thread.

If everyone who has replied to gamavor's post agree, I suggest to move gamavor's post and all subsequent replies to Chit-Chat and call the thread:

"Think with what's in your heart, not with what's in your pants!"

or

"Pants vs Heart?"

The feeling I have expressed such comments prior to your comments!

Have you become so tight that you have missed the humor in:

call the thread:
