Two version of Ararat ?

The first time I have seen the movie, there was a microphone on the top of scenes with Ani that were taken away on the other versions, as well as the end message was changed as "...Holocaust experts and people like Usher etc..."(quoting from memory). When the first version was telling it was based on Ushers diary etc...

Has someone noticed that difference ? I know that there is some variations of the movie, one version of 126 minute(presented at Canne), the 116 minutes and a US version of 115 minutes, could it be that the second version I saw was the one that finaly it was decided to be the final commercial product ?

  • 1 year later...

I have read that at the end of the second version, the DVD version if I remember writes that as well, I lost my DVDs, weird, I don't remember where I've put them, but will eventually find it and will tell more about it.

Your Brtisih version is I believe the second one, the DVD version with the deleted scene contain some of the scenes that were present during the viewing in Canne.

So, that will still mean that there is 3 versions, and another one that will contain the cut of the rape scene if ever it is shown in Turkey. Egoyan did many editing... more so when the deleted 15 minutes or so gives clue about many things, like Celia selling drugs, the Noe Ark etc...

That was a quick reply Domino! :P

A clarification, I mean that on the second DVD there is the deleted scenes, the actual movie on DVD(the first DVD) don't contain them... I managed to build the entire non-cut movie by including the deleted scenes and expected to burn them on a DVD, but I scrapped my HD before I could burn it. :(

Wouldn't than mean there were 4 versions - where does the "collectors edition" on DVD fit in. Does it contain more scenes?

The DVD edition contained 2 DVDs, the first one was the movie(the same as the second version on the theatres), on the second DVD, there was the deleted scenes and some video shoutings of Akhdamar and Ani(it was shouted from the far only by zoom)... it was so exeptional.

Aah. So the 2nd dvd is the "collectors dvd" and the cut scenes are stuck in as extras and are not integrated into the standard film, i.e. it is not a "director's cut" version. That's interesting, coz the 2nd dvd doesn't seem to be available in Britain.

Oh - are those running times taken from DVD running times? Since cinema is 25fps, and since TV in america is 30fps approx, and in Europe 24 fps, the diference in running times may not be because there are additional scenes or cut scenes.

That is a good question. But I know that Canne version contained scenes that were later deleted, because it was announced that way here in Canada... the first version I saw, was 1 minute longer I believe(and that one already had deleted scene compared to what was shown in Canne), some things appeared to have been deleted, the second one was the official one shown in the US and elsewhere(I don't know which version was shown in France, could be the first one).

The cut scenes you see on the second DVD makes about 15 minutes or so if you add them, I don't know the difference in framing will reduce it during the conversion.

That's right it isen't included on the first DVD... but I do believe that you could still order it.
