gamavor
Few years ago friend of mine from Yerevan and I, visited an exhibition of natural minerals and stones in Sofia. Needless to say how worthy and beautiful it was, but what struck my companion was the grading of obsidian as 7th in the scale of semi-precious stones. He said: “ We have mountains of obsidian in Armenia”. Well, obviously preciousness has little to do with rarity or quantities available of a certain stone in this case. Obsidian, as far as I know is frozen volcanic lava. Very hard, yet fragile. I’ve seen few souvenirs made in Armenia decorated or made wholly from obsidian. It resembles topaz, but I think is more delicate. What struck me was my friend’s commentary that they melt obsidian in Armenia and adds it to asphalt. According to him that makes Armenian asphalt smoother compared to any other. While I still have hard time believing this, I was wondering about how well developed this industry is. Armenia is very rich in all kinds of stones. I know of a company that had a laboratory testing few of Armenia’s stones for interior heat isolation material of American Space shuttles. My prime interest is in marble, granite and few others. Are there any well-established local companies for production and exports? Any info would be appreciated.
