You have hotmail, so turn on the junk mail protector. It filters out alot of it. Good luck.

Do you use POP to get your mail (like Outlook, Eudora, Netscape Messenger, etc) or do you use a web-based interface (like Hotmail, yahoo)?

With POP, you can set your own filters or use some special software but there is really no easy way to get rid of junk email. Easiest way would be to change your email address and don't give it to anyone other than the people you wish to receive emails from. Use your hotmail address for signing up on different websites, shopping, etc.

They tried to pass some laws against junk email (spam) in the US but it never worked. There are successful laws against telemarketers since it costs a lot to keep calling people ... but with email, it is soooo cheap that the senders don't care that 99.9% of their recipients couldn't care less about their ads.

The other thing is that junk-emailers are not really established companies. That is why they are not really the most law abiding! (they don't have to).

I have been thinking quite a bit about how to stop these bastards (pardon my Japanese) and the conclusion I have come to is that we should organize a global reply to spam day!!! Just imagine, if everyone who receives a message like that replies (by calling their tel number, sending mail to their address, etc), they would be completely crippled and would think twice before sending more junk email. I actually called one of these places once (their 800 number) and left messages saying "Sorry, I am not interested in your product" ... I left that message on about 10 or 12 different mail boxes (it was an 800 number). It probably didn't accomplish much but I feel much better ... actually, I have not received any more emails from them!

There are no easy ways to block spam emails.

I would even say there's no way. You can just try to minimize the number of junk you're getting in your mailbox.

The filters are not an effective way to protect your mailbox because the spammers use fake email addresses so you can not block the sender by email address. They are useful when you're getting emails from the same sender or with the same subject.

There are a few basic rules you need to follow

1. Never give out your personal email address to web sites that show it on their pages.

2. Always give fake email addresse to the sites where you don't need them to contact you (trial downloads, free accesses and so on) but they require an address.

3. In case you need to provide a valid email address (to get account password or instructions), carefully uncheck all 'Notify me ...', 'keep me updated ...' or 'subscribe me ...' type checkboxes.

One more advice : never open a junk email if you know it's junk. Good spammers can detect that you have opened the email and they automatically mark you as a 'new in the net' or 'junk email reader' and increase the quantity of emails sent to you.

but anyways there's is no 100% protection from spammers. Even if you signup for an email account and never use it, in a few days there's a good chance that you'll get the first junk emails. How they found your email address? Someone was telling me that they capture all the email addresses passing trough their servers on the way from your computer to the service provider's server.
