For some strange reason the Pc I'm working at doesn't read them at all and wants to format it. I can't afford to lose the info on the disks at all. Sip Posted October 13, 2004 Report Share Posted October 13, 2004 (edited) NEVER rely on floppies for primary data storage Don't know what to tell you other than if the floppy seems to have problems in one PC, don't let the drive mess with the disk ... it'll usually make it worse ... if the data is important, try to find someone knowledgable to try to recover it if possible. Maybe it's the head of your floppy drive that is the problem... it is a little strange that it is "disks" that aren't working, and not only one disk. dianjan Posted October 14, 2004 Report Share Posted October 14, 2004 You are right. If you reformat the disk, you will lose all data. The first thing that you should do, is try it on other machines. I'm not sure if you already did that, if not try that. If that doesn't work. you should take it to a place that fixes PCs. Best buy has that, they should be able to recover data. Maybe not all, but some. Another advice that I can give you is not to rely on Floppys as your storage device any longer. They are volatile. Do a back up of all your data to a CD, and use USB key rings as your storage device. They hold much more then the floppy does, and they are reliable. I recommend the SanDisk brand. I already have Flash storage, and I was preparing to move my files from the disks to them when all of this happened. I really liked their old DOS based utilities ... the newer ones just seem to rely on the windows scandisk but I haven't confirmed it (it's just a got feeling). For a floppy, I would try to boot to dos (maybe a win 98 startup disk?) and run one of the old norton utilities disk doctors ... Where you can find it is a good question ... I may even have it somewhere on some old CD but I'll have to start to dig and look. I would bet there are plenty of good utilities on the web though... so a google search may not be a bad idea ... I just haven't had to deal with floppies. On a related note, there was a guy on this last offroading trip I went on that had one of those floppy based SONY digital cameras. Sip Posted October 18, 2004 Report Share Posted October 18, 2004 I just remembered that I may have used Badcopy (but I am not 100% sure at this point) to recover files from a formated flash memory card last year.
