  1. ABOUT THE GRATITUDE OF ARMENIANS During the uprising of 1861-62 the residents of Zeitun sent two emissaries to Napoleon III asking for intervention and help in the fight against the Ottomans. In response, the emperor ordered to investigate the situation by sending one of the officials of the French Embassy in Constantinople to Zeitun. Following this, a note was sent to the government of the Ottoman Empire stating that France "always acknowledged that Zeitun was independent and tax-exempt." French academic Albert Vandal recounts an interesting episode in connection with this: "France took over Zeitun's case and achieved his release. When in 8 years, in 1870. , in the far east it became known that France itself was under siege (Franco-Prussian war), captured and in mortal danger, some residents of Zeitun led by one of their priests left their country... they came to join us and fight with us. While great nations have deserted us and turned their backs on us, these humble, uneducated men, these rude hillbillies remembered the service they once rendered and came to repay their debt with blood."
